This week: You may remember the War in the Woods back in the 90’s, where hundreds of activists put their bodies on the line and were arrested to stop the destruction of that gem on the west side of Vancouver Island. All’s well that ends well though, and the Clayoquot, armed with its U.N. recognition is now saved for posterity; or is it?

Glen Scott is a Tofino-based writer and newly minted environmental activist working to increase awareness of the threat of mining on Catface Mountain, in the heart of the U.N.’s World Biosphere Reserve. Glen Scott in the first half.

And; Kevin Neish is a long-time activist who has borne witness to elections in South America, and served as a peace observer to protect threatened populations there. He’s also been to the West Bank to bear witness, with the International Solidarity Movement, of living conditions suffered under Israeli occupation in Palestine. He has been invited to participate in the upcoming convoy, and joins us in the second half.

This week: Today, prisons provide where hospitals once did, and the care they administer falls far short of the Just Society we had so recently striven for. The situation is serious enough, that the British Columbia Civil Liberties Association has mounted a campaign to bring change to the way prisons here treat inmates, especially those fallen through the mental health cracks. Carmen Cheung is a lawyer with the BCCLA, where she works on litigation and legal reform. Before coming here, she worked on criminal and regulatory defense in private practice in New York City. Carmen Cheung in the first half.

And; Dana Frank is a history professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and the author, among other books, of Bananeras: Women Transforming the Banana Unions of Latin America, which focuses on Honduras. She is writing a book on the AFL-CIO’s cold war intervention in the Honduran labor movement. Dana Frank and Hondurans’ “Great Awakening” in the second half.

Dru Oja Jay is a Montreal-based activist, researcher, journalist, member of the editorial collective, The Dominion, and author of the report, ‘Offsetting Resistance: The Effects of Foundation Funding from the Great Bear Rainforest to the Athabasca River.’ Dru Oja Jay and resisting the “Offsetting” of the environmental movement in the second half.

This week: Riki Ott is an American marine biologist and fisher, who found herself nose to nose in a fight with one of the world’s largest corporations and biggest defiler of the environment, Exxon. Ott was at the center of the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill disaster in Prince William Sound, Alaska, and lessons learned during that fight convinced her; the power of corporations must be curtailed if accountability is to be brought to their many crimes against humanity and the environment. She is now involved with the Campaign to Legalize Democracy, a part of the Movement to Abolish Corporate Personhood. Riki Ott and birthing the nation’s 28th Amendment in the second half.

This week: artist and activist, Katherine Hughes. Hughes attended most every day of Rafil Dhafir’s three and a half month trial, bearing witness to the abrogation of justice by lawyers, witnesses, and the judges of his case. She has, in the long interim since his kangaroo court trial worked diligently to educate the public about Dr. Dhafir’s case, the criminalization of Islamic charities, and the threat to American democracy inherent in the persecution of those supporting them. Hughes is currently working on a documentary film exploring the case of the good doctor done wrong. Katherine Hughes in the first half.
