Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Ken Stone November 26, 2020

Welcome back to Gorilla Radio’s home edition recorded on this date, November 26th, 2020.

Eighteen years ago this month, a group of Hamiltonians joined together in efforts to avert a calamitous war. The Hamilton Coalition to Stop the War were not alone in that; in cities around the World tens of thousands fretted and strategized and organized, trying to stand between the United States and the object of its next “war this time”, Iraq.

That collective effort to belay the disaster failed, but the Coalition has continued working to bring to a halt the “generational wars” George W. Bush promised following the 2001 attacks on New York City and the Pentagon.

Ken Stone is a long-time antiwar activist, serving as an executive member of both the Syria Solidarity Movement and Hamilton Coalition to Stop the War. In 2016 Ken participated in the Second International Tour of Peace to Syria, sending back home his column, Dispatch from Syria. Those dispatches are now collected in the book, ‘Defiant Syria: Dispatches from the Second International Tour of Peace to Syria’.

Today, Ken Stone and searching still for a Canadian route to peace.

Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, David Swanson, Ron Ridenour, Janine Bandcroft November 12, 2020

Welcome back to Gorilla Radio’s home edition, recorded live-to-tape via Skype on this date, November 10th, 2020.

It’s that week again, when the citizenry is bidden to bow in remembrance to sacrifices made at the various altars to empire and nationalism of this terrible last century of slaughter. For some that observation is a sombre duty, for others an opportunity to propagandize a pyramidal power construct relegating those at its base to suffer penury, servitude, systemic oppression, and to be periodically pitched into the maw of mechanized warfare.

This vicious cycle may seem eternal, even the natural order of things for we who have no living experience of Peace. But that is the lie of our time, and the abomination we’re called to celebrate on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of this eleventh month.

David Swanson is an author, activist, journalist, and broadcaster. He’s the executive director of World BEYOND War, campaign coordinator for RootsAction.org, and a past Nobel Peace Prize Nominee whose book titles include: ‘War Is A Lie’, ‘When the World Outlawed War’, and ‘Leaving WWII Behind’. David blogs at DavidSwanson.org and WarIsACrime.org, and he’s the host of Talk Nation Radio.

David Swanson in the first half.

And; while last week’s election carnival is yet to come to a head, what happens over the months following is anyone’s guess; there’s less uncertainty for the Julian Assange extradition hearings in London’s Old Bailey where presiding magistrate, Vanessa Baraitser adjourned proceedings saying, “One way or another, my decision is likely to go after the US elections.

The hearing will resume January 4th, and Baraitser will assuredly rule as bidden to by whomever will reside on Pennsylvania Avenue.

Ron Ridenour is a journalist, author, editor, and peace and social justice activist. Some of Ridenour’s many book titles include: ‘The Russian Peace Threat: Pentagon on Alert’, ‘Cuba: Revolution in Action’, ‘Backfire: The CIA’s Biggest Burn’, and his latest, still in progress, ‘Winding Brook Stories’. Ron’s articles feature at numerous online sites, including on This Can’t Be Happening.net, where his ‘A Horror Story in Two Parts: Will England Send Assange-the-Messenger to America’s Dungeons?’ and ‘A Travesty of Justice: UK Caters to the US Government’s Desire to Crush Assange’ appear.

Ron Ridenour and coming out of the trenches for Julian Assange and WikiLeaks in the second half.

And: CFUV Radio broadcaster and host of Plant Powered Radio, Janine Bandcroft will be here at the bottom of the hour with the Left Coast Events Bulletin of some of the good things to be gotten up to in and around our town, and virtually too, in the coming week.

But first, David Swanson and rejecting war as business as usual.

Gorilla Radio 2020 Election Post Mortem Special with Chris Cook and Dave Lindorff November 5, 2020

Welcome back to Gorilla Radio’s home edition Election 2020 Aftermath Special, recorded live-to-tape via Skype on this date, November 5th, 2020.

Most will be aware the US elections were and are a razor-thin affair, with vote counting continuing, despite the best efforts of one side of the contest. Why you may ask would anyone NOT want votes counted? Likely the same reason that party would want to limit the numbers of those eligible to vote in the first place; because they fear the popular political will. Why else?

Dave Lindorff is an award-winning journalist, author, and founding member of the media collective, ThisCantBeHappening.net. Lindorff’s book titles include, ‘The Case for Impeachment: Legal Arguments for Removing President George W. Bush from Office’ and ‘This Can’t Be Happening! Resisting the Disintegration of American Democracy.’ Dave lives just outside Philadelphia, Pennsylvania the very place some believe could decide the next president, (if the Supreme Court doesn’t get there first!) and he’s following the situation there.

Today, Dave Lindorff and can this be happening, again?!

Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Dave Lindorff, Radhika Desai, Janine Bandcroft November 5, 2020

Welcome back to Gorilla Radio’s home edition recorded live-to-tape via Skype on this date, October 30th, 2020.

Monday, October 26th Philadelphia citizen, Walter Wallace Jr. was shot dead by police. His killing was caught on camera and has sparked demonstrations of both the peaceful and violent kind. Wallace was a black man, suffering mental problems. He was known to police, and his family had specifically asked for medical assistance WITHOUT police. Both the shooting and demonstrations have become a part of the political debate, as America nears the November 3rd presidential election.

And; after more than a half year of varying public health measures, from Tennessee to Timbuktu, we’re still mired in the pandemic. And, despite the hundreds of thousands of unnecessary deaths attributed to the disease, Covid’s most devastating effect is on World economies, seeing millions unable to earn a living and vital global supply chains threatened with collapse.

Radhika Desai is a scholar, educator, author, editor, director of the Geopolitical Economy Research Group, and professor in the Department of Political Studies at the University of Manitoba. Radhika’s many essays, primarily on the topics of political economy, culture and nationalism can be found at among other places, CanadianDimension.com where her article, ‘The Fate of Capitalism Hangs in the Balance of International Power,’ the fifth installment of her seven part series, WHAT IS TO BE DONE? A Manifesto for Politics Amid the Pandemic and Beyond, appears.

Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Dahr Jamail September 18, 2020

Welcome back to Gorilla Radio’s continuing efforts, NOT broadcast live from CFUV Radio in the basement of the Student Union Building at the University of Victoria, but emanating live-to-tape via Skype from our home-based … studios on this date, September 18th, 2020.

It’s clear, the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic has changed the way we all live. While questions about how long-lasting a change that will be are moot, what we should be asking is: “How do we make the most of these forced changes, and now choose better ways of living?”

Dahr Jamail is a recovering journalist and author whose latest book, ‘The End of Ice: Bearing Witness and Finding Meaning in the Path of Climate Disruption’ is a vital guide to both understanding these turbulent times, and the possibilities they present. Dahr’s latest project is ‘The Changing Earth: Indigenous Voices From Turtle Island’ a collaboration with indigenous scholar, Stan Rushworth that promises to, “present, via powerful and intimate encounters, the perspective of Indigenous peoples of the United States and Canada on the Earth’s climate and interrelated Covid-19 emergencies.”

Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Tyler Shipley September 4, 2020

We all grew up with those infomercial-lengthed Canadian history bites, Heritage Minutes. With production values just hoakey enough to appear made by the Ministry of Education for your Grade 6 Socials class, the upbeat and nationhood-affirming vignettes have become, like the TransCanada and some other stuff one of the things that makes us Canadians Canadian. And, like some of the best-loved stories we like to tell ourselves about ourselves, Heritage Minutes is just a pile of crap. Or so contends my first guest.

Tyler Shipley is Professor of Culture, Society and Commerce at Humber College’s Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning, and founding member of Canadian poliprog band, Consumer Goods. His first book, ‘Ottawa and Empire: Canada and the Military Coup in Honduras’ taught us more about ourselves than we hoped to learn, and the same is promised of his second title, ‘Canada in the World: Settler Capitalism and the Colonial Imagination.’ His recent article, ‘The stunning misinformation and whitewashing of racism behind Canada’s Heritage Minutes’ currently challenges our childhood indoctrination from the pages of The Canada Files website.

Tyler Shipley and catching up on Canada’s pretend history, even as the real one catches up with us.

As with much of Donald Trump’s televised behaviour his June 1st march, Bible in hand, from the Oval Office to St. John’s Church across Lafayette Square would be just another comic display we’ve come to expect from the orange-faced clown president, but for the club-swinging, gas projectile-shooting goon squad preceding he and his clatch of reluctant government A-list photo-op backdroppers. But, there’s nothing funny about what that media exercise was meant to convey and what it means for the near future of America.

Dave Lindorff is an independent, award-winning journalist, author, and founding editor of the news website, ThisCantBeHappening.net. His articles can too be found at Salon.com and The Nation magazine, where his recent piece, ‘Tear Gas and Clubs in Lafayette Square Were Just the Beginning’ appears.

Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Will Tell June 10th, 2020

Welcome to Gorilla Radio’s continuing efforts, NOT broadcast live from CFUV Radio in the basement of the Student Union Building at the University of Victoria, but emanating live-to-tape via Skype from our home-based … studios on this date, June 10th, 2020.

As the tidal wave that has been the Covid-19 lockdown ebbs, around the World the financial and social damage wrought in its wake is beginning to be revealed. While Wall Street rockets, the biggest and strongest buffeted best by government bailouts, workers are finding promises made at the height of crisis are now quietly being broken. And like the pandemic itself, the pattern of feeding piles of public funds to corporations while pleading poor mouth to the starving knows no borders.

Will Tell is an expat living in rural southern India who says, as well as reneging on promises of financial aid to small business, the Indian government has, “NOT delivered on its promise to subsidise the ‘day labourers’. This includes taxi drivers, rickshaw drivers […and] self-employed skilled tradesmen […] either in the form of money […] or in delivery of staples [like] rice, dahl, cooking oil, [and] sugar.”
