Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Karl Grossman, Robert Hunziker March 11, 2021

Welcome back to Gorilla Radio’s Home Edition, recorded March 2nd, 2021 Sept. 17, 2016

This March 11th marks the tenth anniversary of the Fukushima tsunami-engendered nuclear disaster. And, what have we learned? Ten years after, even as Japan continues cleaning up the mess, there is no solution to the question of just what to do with irradiated debris already collected, or how to deal with the contaminated cooling water still being generated every day, and now amounting to millions of litres.

In fact, far from getting a handle on the problem, things are only getting worse; as JapanToday reports, “The decades-long challenge to scrap the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant… is becoming more complex as recent remote-controlled probes have highlighted just how damaged the reactors are.

And yet, the nuclear industry is enjoying a renaissance, buoyed by concerns for climate change, and an unlikely partner in NASA and its collaborators who recently landed nukes on Mars.

Karl Grossman is professor of journalism at State University of New York/College at Old Westbury, and author of, ‘The Wrong Stuff: The Space’s Program’s Nuclear Threat to Our Planet’, and ‘Cover Up: What You Are Not Supposed to Know About Nuclear Power’. He’s also the host of the nationally syndicated television program, Enviro Close-UP with Karl Grossman, and is an associate with the media watch group Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR). Karl’s articles too appear at CounterPunch.org, and Nation of Change, among other places, where I found his latest, ‘Plutonium—the most lethal of all radioactive substances—in space’.

And; what about the Olympic Games? In 2016, the IOC announced not only would Japan host the 2020 Games, it would do so in the nuclear shadow of Fukushima Prefecture. But, Fate intervened in the form of the Covid-19 pandemic. But, but, the IOC and Japan determined to carry on come pandemic Hell, or atomic high waters, rescheduling Japan 2020, to July 2021. And, despite 80% of Japanese polled saying the games should be postponed again, new Tokyo Olympic organizing committee president, Seiko Hashimoto is reassuring the public it will be safe to for the Games to go on saying, “The situation around coronavirus doesn’t go easy on us.

About Fukushima’s lingering nuclear radiation and the threat it posed, Hashimoto had this to say, [crickets].

Robert Hunziker is an environmental journalist whose climate clarion calls appear in numerous journals and multiple languages around the World and across the internet. He’s also appeared in a variety of media to talk about global climate change and has written extensively about the ongoing aftermath of the Fukushima nuclear disaster. I spoke to Robert waaaaaay back in 2016 about the then newly announced winning Tokyo Olympics bid, and Japan’s “progress” cleaning up the World’s worst civilian nuclear disaster.

But first, Karl Grossman and Earth’s nuclear envoy to Mars.

Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Robert Hunziker, Dave Lindorff, Janine Bandcroft October 3rd, 2019

September 11th past marked more than the eighteenth anniversary of the day western democracy died, it also commemorated the eight and a half years passed since a tsunami slammed into Japan’s Fukushima prefecture.

Today, though not as intended, Tokyo Electric Power’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station chugs on, still creating the byproducts if not the benefits of the atomic revolution.

Till now, most of the contaminated water used to continually cool the melted-down cores of the wrecked plant has been stored in a massive tank field, stretching as far as the eye can see. But after eight and a half years, Tokyo Electric, aka TEPCO says they’re running out of storage room. Fortunately however, TEPCO’s got a plan.

Robert Hunziker is an environmental journalist whose climate clarion calls appear in numerous journals and multiple languages around the World and across the internet. He’s also appeared in a variety of electronic media to talk about global climate change, penned numerous articles on the ever-quickening polar ice melt, and written extensively about the ongoing aftermath of the Fukushima nuclear disaster. His latest article on that near-forgotten catastrophe, ‘Fukushima’s Radioactive Water Crisis‘ appears at CounterPunch.org.

And; those who reveal unwelcome truths are seldom rewarded. Whether receiving the punishment of whistleblower Julian Assange, languishing yet in British solitary confinement, or threats of similar treatment made by the government of Japan should any journalist there for example have the temerity to dig up dirt on the corruption at the core of its nuclear power industry, these are indeed dangerous times for truth-tellers. Now, America has deployed another answer for troublesome pests in the press and other cage rattlers.

Dave Lindorff is a publisher, investigative journalist, and author. The former Los Angeles Daily News government bureau chief and freelance reporter now writes for and publishes the multiple Project Censored award-winning online news website, This Can’t Be Happening, where a transcript of his recent NPR interview, ‘Dave Lindorff Tells about Finding Himself on the US Government’s Terrorist Watch List’ appears. Lindorff’s book titles include, ‘This Can’t Be Happening! Resisting the Disintegration of American Democracy,’ ‘Marketplace Medicine: The Rise of the For Profit Hospital Chains,’ and ‘Killing Time: An Investigation into the Death Row Case of Mumia Abu-Jamal.’

Dave Lindorff and what it takes to make the US Terror Watchlist in the second half.

And; Victoria-based activist and long-time Gorilla Radio contributor, Janine Bandcroft will be here at the bottom of the hour with the Left Coast Events Bulletin of some of the good things to be gotten up to in and around our town in the coming week.

Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Pablo Ouziel, Robert Hunziker, Janine Bandcroft October 26th, 2017

Right now, as night falls in Spain the future of the country is shrouded in uncertainty. The referendum on independence that began October, and deemed “illegal” by the federal government, has predictably proven divisive, with each of the main players involved, Spanish prime minister Mariano Rajoy, and Catalonia’s regional president, Carles Puigdemont showing little appetite for compromise. Rajoy promises to dissolve Catalonia’s parliament, and reschedule elections, while unilateral secession is Puigdemont’s only arrow in the quiver.

Dr. Pablo Ouziel is a Post-Doctoral fellow at UVic whose project in progress is, ‘Towards Democratic Responses to the Crisis of Democracy in Spain: Forms of Participatory and Representative Civic Engagement.’

Pablo Ouziel in the first half.

And; beyond the partisan barbs, it’s safe to say Donald Trump is no ecology defender. Surrounded already by climate change deniers and petroleum industry insiders in hiring Scott Pruitt as head of the EPA however, the former real estate tycoon and media phenomenon sent a particularly loud and clear message to businesses big and small: “Damn the enviros, full

speed ahead!”

Robert Hunziker is an environmental journalist whose climate clarion calls appear in numerous journals and multiple languages around the World and across the internet. He’s also appeared in a variety of electronic media to talk about global climate change, written extensively about the ongoing aftermath of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, and penned numerous articles on the ever-quickening polar ice melt.

In his recent article, ‘Mr. Toxicity Zaps America‘ Hunziker reports Environmental Protection Agency head, Scott Pruitt “nixed his own agency’s proposal of 2015 to ban the toxic chemical chlorpyrifos, an insecticide that attacks the nervous system of pesky insects, as well as pesky and non-pesky people…”

Robert Hunziker and the EPA’s number one “toxics defender” in the second half.

And; Victoria-based activist and CFUV Radio broadcaster at-large, Janine Bandcroft will bring us the Left Coast Events bulletin at the bottom of the hour. But first, Pablo Ouziel, perched atop the peak of Spain’s tipping point.
