This week: Riki Ott is an American marine biologist and fisher, who found herself nose to nose in a fight with one of the world's largest corporations and biggest defiler of the environment, Exxon. Ott was at the center of the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill disaster in Prince William Sound, Alaska, and lessons learned during that fight convinced her; the power of corporations must be curtailed if accountability is to be brought to their many crimes against humanity and the environment. She is now involved with the Campaign to Legalize Democracy, a part of the Movement to Abolish Corporate Personhood. Riki Ott and birthing the nation's 28th Amendment in the second half.

Hughes attended most every day of Rafil Dhafir's three and a half month trial, bearing witness to the abrogation of justice by lawyers, witnesses, and the judges of his case. She has, in the long interim since his kangaroo court trial worked diligently to educate the public about Dr. Dhafir's case, the criminalization of Islamic charities, and the threat to American democracy inherent in the persecution of those supporting them. Hughes is currently working on a documentary film exploring the case of the good doctor done wrong. Katherine Hughes in the first half.

Last month, Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper prorogued prematurely the nation's parliament. This is the second time in just more than a year that Harper has made used the device to shut down debate in the House. The last time was to avoid an imminent non-confidence vote; this time, it is widely believed the move was made to shut down a parliamentary investigation into the so-called Afghan Detainee Torture scandal. Thousands of Canadians came out today across the nation to voice their opposition to the misuse of Canadian democracy, and I attended the rally in Victoria, B.C.

Yes, today is that one day set aside each year to honour our fair city's namesake, the late Queen Victoria, Empress of India, Protector of the Faith, etc. As befitting an imperial fete, the hoi polloi lined the streets of the city to pay homage to convoys of Chamber of Commerce-approved floats, while being berated by representatives of the newer empire, phalanxes of American high school marching bands, their blaring, brassy marshal tunes a reminder of just why I hate a parade. Just why these American kids come up here yearly to pay homage to a dead monarch, the epitome of all their young republic fought to overthrow, however remains a bit of a mystery, like so much about our cousins south. Those paragons of truth, justice, and the American way have it seems, in these last years, lost their way. Nearly seven years after the fateful 9/11 attacks, the charade first floated by the Bush administration to explain the infamy of that day persists, few yet daring to question the absurdity of the Emperor's squirrely tale. Hal Sisson is a Victoria-based author and member of the city's 9/11 Truth Movement. He's a former newspaper reporter, lawyer, and author of numerous books, including: 'The Big Bamboozle,' 'Caverns of the Cross,' and 'Modus Operandi 9/11,' a fictional accounting of some of the strange facts on the ground surrounding the crime of the century ignored by investigators and the media. Eco-Activist Ingmar Lee climbs flag pole at BC Legislature Having long ago grown weary of corporate control of political and social processes, long time environmentalist Ingmar Lee decided to join the 100,000 strong peoples' conference in Copenhagen and express his concerns about the destruction of BC's wilderness. "It's time to stop the for-profit logging corporations with their insidious and on-going destruction of the last of Vancouver Island's ancient temperate rainforest," Ingmar insists. Lee's protest today highlights the proposed Enbridge Pipeline, planned to carry oil products from the infamous Tar Sands in Alberta to be then shipped across the Pacific. He targets B.C. premier, Gordon Campbell, ironically the recipient last week in Copenhagen of a "Green" leadership award. Lee has led movements in B.C. to protect ancient forests, and protest the shipment of raw logs out of BC.

Once declared a war on communism and Marxist rebellion, now it is called a drug war. But Colombia's "drug war" bears strange casualties; its prisons are full of detained activists, and unionists, and indigenous rights proponents, not the dope dealers you would expect. In fact, Colombia's war today is against the underclass and indigenous, as it always has been. Kevin Neish is just returned from a trip he took down Colombia way to bear witness to the trial of friend Liliany Obando, a social rights activist wrongly imprisoned for more than a year, and finally preparing to face Colombia's version of justice. A couple weeks ago, Democracy Now! presenter Amy Goodman was detained at Canada's Douglas Crossing as she traveled to Vancouver with her 'Breaking the Silence' book tour. The Canada Border Service demanded she and her colleagues surrender notes and their laptop computers after she denied her scheduled talk had anything to do with the upcoming Vancouver Olympics. Though delayed, Goodman made it to Vancouver, and appeared in Victoria at the University of Victoria afterward, where she related her experience to a packed house. Today, Amy Goodman (almost live) from the Michele Pujol Room, right here at the Student Union Building. And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will join us at the bottom of the hour with goings on from Victoriaz streetz. This week, Lierre Keith is a long-time sustainability activist, feminist, editor, and author whose book titles include: 'Conditions of War,' 'Skyler Gabriel,' and her latest book, 'The Vegetarian Myth: Food, Justice, and Sustainability.' Keith writes: "I want a full accounting, an accounting that goes way beyond what's dead on your plate. I'm asking about everything that died in the process, everything that was killed to get that food onto your plate." And; in Great Britain, hearings are being conducted into just how that country became entangled in the Iraq war. Astonishing testimony was released last week regarding secret meetings held between George W. Bush and Tony Blair that suggest the two men plotted the invasion well before any of the supposed "justifications" for such an action were merited. Dave Lindorff is an award-winning investigative reporter and author active in journalism for more than three decades. Dave Lindorff and Britain's tardy commission on that country's involvement in the invasion and occupation of Iraq. And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will join us at the bottom of the hour to bring us up to speed with the goings on in and around Victoria. Iconic American journalist, Amy Goodman appeared at the University of Victoria's Michelle Pujol room to address a full house on her latest book tour, 'Breaking the Sound Barrier.' Goodman passed through Victoria a few years back on another book tour, but her reception by Canada's gatekeepers this time around reminds again of the country's rapid decline towards a security state. Goodman anchors the most broadly disseminated news program outside corporate media. Democracy Now is seen and heard around the world across modern media. Though it may be a stretch to expect the Douglas crossing detail sophisticated enough to know who Ms. Goodman is, or appreciate how they and Canada would be perceived by their excessive treatment of the renown journalist and her associates, perhaps in the coming days questions will be raised in the House about this latest in a long line of increasingly worrying incidents involving the Border Service?
