Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Jon Elmer Raw from Bethlehem II Aug. 2, 2009

GR This Week
Jon Elmer keeps us abreast of happenings from the West Bank town of Bethlehem.

Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Robert Jensen, Jon Elmer July 27, 2009

Today, two seasoned guests of Gorilla Radio past agreed to repeat. Regurgitating too is the annual celebration of colonial dominion, known colloquially as, “B.C. Day.” It was just after that day last year I talked with author, and activist, professor Robert Jensen following a chance encounter with Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper.

And; last week, last month, last year, and for the last ten years Gorilla Radio has aired, Jon Elmer has brought to us an insider’s look at daily life within the siege of remnant Palestine. Stymied at Egypt’s border crossing with Gaza: (see here)last week, Jon has since passed into the West Bank.

Chris Cook hosts Gorilla Radio, airing live every Monday, 5-6pm Pacific Time. In Victoria at 101.9FM, 104.3 cable, and on the internet at: http://cfuv.uvic.ca. He also serves as a contributing editor to the web news site, www.pacificfreepress.com. Check out the GR blog at: http://GorillaRadioBlog.blogspot.com

Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Jon Elmer, Ingmar Lee, Janine Bandcroft July 20, 2009

Despite George Galloway’s and the Viva Palestina – USA crossing from Egypt into Gaza last week, Israel’s pitiless stranglehold on the population of the besieged territory, more resembling an open air prison than anything else, continues unabated. Canadian freelance photojournalist, Jon Elmer has made the crossing into Gaza a half-dozen times since the beginning of the Second intifada, but today his efforts from Egypt have been stymied. Jon Elmer from Egypt, waiting for a Gaza crossing in the first segment.

And; “Science” claimed trump over the safety of locals, the environment, and wildlife recently in Shearwater, B.C. Ingmar Lee, a local wildlife researcher and world famous ecology defender, stepped in to defuse a bomb secreted into the middle of his community when he discovered its clock was counting down to detonation.

Dr. Andy Hole is a science teacher from Virginia. He’s part of the team of science teachers and their students whose summer lark is called the Batholith Project.

We come into the unfolding story as Ingmar Lee replies to comments made in the press by the good Dr. Hole, and takes the media offensive.

(In the spirit of full disclosure, a concept the “scientists” involved in this controversial project seem unfamiliar with, Ingmar Lee is a long-time friend of Gorilla Radio, and you can catch up with the background to this unfolding story at Pacific Free Press.com under the heading: Monkeywrenching the Batholiths.)

Ingmar Lee and pulling the plug on the bomb in the second segment.

And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will check in from somewhere in America, along the 20th Pastors for Peace blockade-busting caravan to Cuba at the bottom of the hour. But first, Jon Elmer reporting from the Gaza fence-line.

Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Alexandra Morton, Alastair Craighead, Janine Bandcroft July 6, 2009

It's one of British Columbia's most baffling mysteries: Why are the B.C. Liberals content to risk the future of the pacific wild salmon, and put into doubt the viability of the province's ecological heritage, all for the benefit of a small group of international fish farm operators? Why do they insist on continuing to endanger the fishing and eco-tourism industries, and with fish farm expansion plans, threatening perhaps the collapse and extinction of the keystone species, the Pacific Salmon? Just what does Mr. Campbell and his cabinet collaborators stand to gain from expanding foreign fish farm operations here? Alexandra Morton is a Broughton archipelago-based whale and fish researcher and environmental activist named Conservationist of the Year by the BC Wildlife Federation. She's the author of numerous books on the whales, dolphins, and fish of the pacific northwest, and her latest is the retrospective, 'Heart of the Raincoast: A Life Story.' Alexandra Morton in the first half.

And; last year, Victorians were stunned to hear of the removal from the board of The Land Conservancy of its founding member, Bill Turner. Turner was pushed out in what many TLC faithful termed a coup, and they've vowed to see the popular environmentalist returned to the helm. Alastair Craighead is a long-time community activist in and around Victoria. He's a co-founder of the Greater Victoria Cycling Coalition, served as president of the Fairfield Community Association, and sat as a Victoria City Councillor. While with the city, he chaired the first Victoria Environment Committee, and as a director of the Victoria Water Distric, he successfully stopped logging within the water district's lands. Alastair Craighead and the local ties binding Victoria's environmental community in the second segment.

And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV radio broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft embarked yesterday from the Peace Arch border crossing bound for Cuba, the small Caribbean island embargoed by the United States for nearly fifty years, with the Pastors for Peace. We'll try hooking up with Janine from somewhere in Washington state at the bottom of the hour.

Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Dahr Jamail, Robert Parry, Janine Bandcroft July 13, 2009

Approaching the seventh anniversary of the America invasion of Iraq few conscious observers still harbour any doubts the usurpation of Saddam Hussein had anything to do with either weapons of mass destruction, or providing aid to the long suffering Iraqi populace. Stripped of its supposed raison d’etre for being in Iraq, what is the American military fighting for? According to freelance journalist and author, Dahr Jamail, a growing number of U.S. soldiers in Iraq are simply not continuing to fight. Echoing the fading days of America’s war agianst the people of Vietnam, the “boots on the ground,” increasingly finding their patrol missions both futile and fatal, are failing to carry out orders.

Dahr Jamail is a multi-award winning journalist, recently returned from his third unembedded tour covering the unnatural disaster in Iraq. He’s the author of, ‘Beyond the Green Zone: Dispatches from an Unembedded Journalist in Iraq,’ and the recently published, ‘Will to Resist: Soldiers Who Refuse to Fight in Iraq and Afghanistan,’ from which he published the article ‘Refusing to Comply: The Tactics of Resistance in an All-Volunteer Military’ at Tom Dispatch.com. Dahr Jamail in the first segment.

And; what’s old is nuevo again in Central America, at least as far as Honduras and the new Obama administration is concerned. Two weeks ago, the democratically elected Patrone-cum populist president, Manuel “Mel” Zelaya was rousted from his bed in the middle of the night and ousted from his country in a Coup d’Etat. Coming in the midst of high-minded U.S. disapprobations against the Iranian mullahs and their disdain for democracy, the Latin American coup, carried out by a host of graduates from the notorious School of the Americas, that training centre in the United States specializing in torture methods, death squad fundamentals, and of course, the proper conduct of coups d’etat, comes as a bit of an embarrassment for “enlightened” new president, Barak Obama. Robert Parry is a freelance journalist and author whose own experience encompasses the Dirty Wars in Latin America during Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush’s reign of terror in the 1980’s. He’s founder of the web news site, Consortium News.com, whose book titles include: ‘Neck Deep: The Disastrous Presidency of George W. Bush,’ ‘Secrecy and Privilege: The Rise of the Bush Dynasty from Watergate to Iraq,’ and ‘Lost History: Contras, Cocaine, the Press & Project Truth.’ Robert Parry and back to the future in the second half.

And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will check in at the bottom of the hour from her current assignment on the road with the Pastors for Peace Caravan to Cuba. But first; Dahr Jamail and Refusniks American style.
