Ape Goes to Yves Engler Feb. 9, 2011

Harper’s Conservatives have gone out of their way to make enemies and alienate countries around the world. Under Harper, Canada has repeatedly sabotaged international climate negotiations; obstructed efforts to reschedule the Congo’s debt; failed to cut aid to the Honduran military government after it removed elected president Manuel Zelaya; repeatedly criticized the Venezuelan government; signed a free-trade agreement with Latin America’s most repressive state; militarized aid to Haiti; flew fighter jets near Russian airspace; unconditionally supported Israel against the Palestinians, paved the way for a possible attack on Iran; rejected a proposal to make diplomatic and financial support for resource companies operating overseas contingent upon socially responsible conduct; supported torture in Afghanistan and embraced an increasingly violent counterinsurgency war; and lost the vote for a seat at the UN Security Council.

The result? Canada has few friends left in international bodies.

Yves Engler, author of The Black Book of Canadian Foreign Policy, examines Harper’s foreign policies and why the UN did not promote Canada for a seat on the Security Council.

Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, David Swanson, Jon Elmer, Janine Bandcroft Jan. 3, 2010

David Swanson is a political activist, journalist, and author, whose latest book, ‘War is a Lie’ puts to the lie the underpinnings of the multi-generational state of conflict ruling world events for at least the last century. While ‘War is a Lie’ serves as stark reminder of our collective abrogation of morality and the duties necessary to maintain any semblance of civilization, David Swanson’s previous book, ‘Daybreak: Undoing the Imperial Presidency and Forming a More Perfect Union’ provides the contempory context of the nightmare new world order perpetual war has engendered. David Swanson in the first half.

And; Jon Elmer is a freelance photojournalist who lives in and reports from Palestine. Over the near decade past, Jon has informed this program of the daily realities faced by those living under Israeli occupation from that occupation’s heart. Jon Elmer and the stones recently turned in Palestine in the second half.

Gorilla Radio Year Ender with Chris Cook and Janine Bandcroft Dec. 27, 2010

We leave the usual show format for today’s special look back at the year that has been in this country, and take a peak at a few things we might expect for the coming year. There will be music and blatherskyting, and Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will drop by too.

You needn’t be a soothsayer to see; Canada as we know it today has changed mightily since joining America and its “International Community” declaration of war against all the Peoples living either above, or along the transport routes of, coveted mineral wealth. It is a necessarily perpetual war, or at least, one that will last until either that mineral wealth is depleted, or the expense of taking and defending it militarily breaks the economic back of the new Imperium.

Hope that any kind of American moral renaissance might change its martial course abroad, or amend its ruthless economic policies at home under Barack Obama’s administration, has withered in the bare light of the Democrats’ complete corruption, and revelations of their leader’s intransigent pragmatism.

Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Loretta Napoleoni, Soumya Natarajan, Janine Bandcroft, Dec. 20, 2010

This week: Loretta Napoleoni, is an expert on finance, best-selling author, and advisor to governments around the world. She says the nature of finance has radically changed over the last decade, seeing a growing interdependence between states, criminals, and terrorists that reaches to the very heart of the global economy.

Napoleoni warns; since 9/11 that interdependence has, quote: “[E]xtended the bounderies of a shadow world that threatens to replace our own if we do not break away from the legacy of the war on terror.”

Loretta Napoleoni, and following the money in The Global War on Terror in the first half.

And; Soumya Natarajan is a recent resident of this beautiful west coast, and she’s a new contributor to CFUV’s public affairs broadcasts. She’s just completed a documentary on the collaboration of two local Victoria organizations to promote the concept of Zero Waste.

Soumya Natarajan and refusing to surrender our pristine pacific to garbage and the odious effluent of corporate and government propaganda in the second half.

And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft at the bottom of the hour to bring us the latest newz from the city’s streets and beyond. But first, Loretta Napoleoni bringing to bear the focus on the true cause of the War on Terror, and following its lifeline; the money.

Local human rights and social justice activist, Terry Wolfwood attended an Algerian conference on Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli captivity. Terry has travelled to the West Bank and Jordan to participate in meetings and actions to further Palestinian dignity and national self-actualization on numerous occasions, bringing news of their struggle back to Victoria. Terry Wolfwood in the first half.

And; all signs point to a spring election in B.C., where the economy, and sudden introduction of the so-called, Harmonized Sales Tax promises to be a big issue. But there’s more going on in the province, and within the two leading parties, than just the HST.

Mehdi Najari is an on again off again member of the NDP, who ran against Carole James for the party’s leadership in 1988 because, he says he was “fed up with [the] corporate lackeys and impostors” controlling the NDP. Mehdi Najari and the NDP’s latest chance to get it right n the second half.

Jon Elmer in the first half.

And; Susan Lindauer was an American intelligence asset from 1996 right up until the day “that changed everything.” In the days and weeks following 9/11, she witnessed her government and the press excoriate the “intelligence community” for its failure to protect the homeland, and ridicule hers and her colleague’s service to the nation.

Outraged, she demanded her side of the story be told, applying to be included in Congressional Hearings, only to find herself to be the first non-Arab American arrested and imprisoned under the newly-enacted PATRIOT Act. Susan Lindauer is out now, and as determined as ever that her story be told. She is the author of the book, ‘Extreme Prejudice: The Terrifying Story of the Patriot Act and the Cover Ups of 9/11 and Iraq.’

Susan Lindauer in the second half.

And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will join us at the bottom of the hour to bring us up to speed with newz from the streets of Victoria and beyond.

Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Amy Goodman Oct. 28, 2006

This is one from the archives. Due to one of the many hacker attacks Pacific Free Press has suffered as consequence of airing views unpopular with the goals of the dominant order, we lost many of Gorilla Radio’s original files. It’s been a slow process replacing them, and here is one from October 28, 2006 I recorded with Democracy Now’s Amy Goodman. I reached her on her cel, as she sped towards a speaking engagement in Victoria.
