Mr. Ives was the lead writer and editor of a series of articles published in Haiti Liberté and The Nation magazine based on U.S.
diplomatic cables on Haiti from 2003 until 2010. The cables were entrusted to the two publications by the Wikileaks organization. His articles are being compiled in a forthcoming book to be published by The Nation. Mr. Ives has travelled five times to Haiti since the January 12, 2010 earthquake. On two of those visits, he worked with the host and
broadcast crew of the Democracy Now! syndicated news program. Two other trips were film shoots with Crowing Rooster Arts, a film production collective in which Mr. Ives is a collaborator. He has also appeared frequently on Al Jazeera news broadcasts.
Mr. Ives is a filmmaker who has directed and collaborated on many documentary films about Haiti including Bitter Cane (1983), Killing the Dream (1992) and Rezistans (1997). He is a founding member of the International Support Haiti Network (ISHN), formerly the Haiti Support Network (HSN), and has led numerous delegations to Haiti to investigate human rights conditions, trade union struggles, peasant land conflicts and efforts to oppose state-enterprise privatizations.
Kim Ives is a co-host of the weekly radio program Haiti: The Struggle Continues, which airs on WBAI 99.5 FM in New York, and a weekly Haitian TV show, produced by Haiti Liberté, entitled Kafou Verite. He has contributed to several books on Haiti including Dangerous Crossroads published by NACLA (1994); The Haiti Files, edited by James Ridgeway (1993); and Haiti: A Slave Revolution, published by the International Action Center (2004), and most recently Tectonic Shifts, due out in January 2012.

This week: David W. Johnston is a biological oceanographer and conservation biologist at Duke University’s Marine Lab. His focus is on framing ecology and the habitat needs of marine animals in relation to conservation. He is currently working on projects studying marine vertebrates, and the design and utility of marine protected areas for them, emphasizing the effects of climate change on marine animals and the sustainability of incidental mortality and directed harvests of marine animals.
Johnston is lead author on the newly published paper, ‘The Effects of Climate Change on Harp Seals (Pagophilus groenlandicus),’ and if its conclusions are correct, continuing the east coast commercial seal hunt, (or “cull”, as it is often characterized by governments) could stress targeted populations beyond recovery.

Richard is a long-time island social justice and environment activist, whose kayak trip through Vancouver Island’s pristine East Creek and Klaskish Inlet with Ingmar Lee led to the seven year odyssey of exploration culminating in the film. He has been touring festivals across the country, with ‘Raincoast,’ screening in Montreal, Vancouver, and winning the Mountain Culture Film Award at Whistler.

Mainstream lawyers assert Staniford “disseminated and published defamatory and false statements about the company”on the Global Alliance Against Industrial Aqauaculture, or GAAIA site. A 25 acre sustainable living demonstration site and education centre, located in Shawnigan Lake, just up the road from Victoria, OUR Ecovillage has been living the green dream, while training countless others in the ways of living they can employ to lessen their load on the environment. From food security and alternative building models, to teaching people how to live and work cooperatively, the project emphasizes it is; “by community, for community, through community.” It all sounds ideal; but, there’s a problem in paradise.

Gilad Atzmon’s New Book: The Wandering Who? A Study Of Jewish Identity Politics
Jewish identity is tied up with some of the most difficult and contentious issues of today. The purpose in this book is to open many of these issues up for discussion. This week: According to the Palestine Liberation Organization, Israel killed more than 180 Palestinians last year, and dispossessed thousands more. The PLO also credits the Israel Occupation Authority with green lighting the construction of 26,837 new settlement units on Palestinian lands, while confiscating thousands of acres of land, and razing to the ground nearly 500 homes.
Those sobering figures will set the stage this week for meetings between Israeli and Palestinian negotiators in Amman, where they hope to set an agenda for peace talks. Meanwhile, the Israeli daily, Ha’aretz reports the Israeli Defense Force is planning a successor to 2008’s infamous Operation Cast Lead, where as many as fifteen hundred Palestinians perished.

Shortly before the holidays, the Committee for Monetary and Economic Reform, or COMER, filed suit in Federal Court, charging the government of Canada restore the role of the Bank of Canada to its intended purpose, and challenging the federal government’s accounting methods and calculations as pertains to the tabling of the budget and issuing of “tax credits” to big business and other select taxpayers.

On the morning of December 21st, 1918,
French-Canadian conscripts in the 259th Battalion
of the Canadian Expeditionary Force (Siberia)
mutinied at the corner of Fort and Quadra Street
in downtown Victoria. They refused to embark for
service in a new theatre of war – the Russian
port of Vladivostok and Siberia, to aid the White
Russian forces fighting the Bolsheviks in the
Russian Civil War. The war on the Western Front
had ended six weeks earlier, prompting sharp
debates within Canadian society and the military
force itself.
But at the point of the bayonet, the mutinous men
were forced to embark for Russia, exceeding the
powers granted under Canada’s conscription law,
the Military Service Act 1917. The ringleaders
were shackled together in the bottom of the ship,
the SS Teesta, and received sentences of between
30 days and 3 years imprisonment with hard labour
for “Joining in a mutiny while on active service
in his majesty’s armed forces.”
This year, on the 93rd anniversary of the mutiny,
we are gathering to remember this forgotten
moment in the history of Victoria, French and
English Canada and the world. The event will
feature the story of the conscripts and mutiny
itself, a moment of silence for the fallen
soldiers of the Siberian Expedition, a musical
interlude, and a public call for a formal apology
for the families and a full pardon from the
federal government for the French-Canadian
soldiers wrongfully convicted of mutiny at
Victoria.

This week: The public and professional input period, or evidentiary hearings of the Cohen Commission ends today. The Commission had already wound down, when evidence of a deadly virus present here in the Pacific Northeast was made too public to ignore. Alex Roslin is a freelance journalist, television news producer, and the current president of the Canadian Centre for Investigative Reporting. He’s a three time winner of the Canadian Association of Journalists awards for reporting, and has received numerous more nominations for both CAJ and National Magazine Awards. He recently published, ‘What Are Officials Hiding About Fukushima?’ an expose into that disaster’s silent aftermath.
