Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, David W. Johnston, Richard Boyce, Janine Bandcroft Feb. 6, 2012

This week: David W. Johnston is a biological oceanographer and conservation biologist at Duke University’s Marine Lab. His focus is on framing ecology and the habitat needs of marine animals in relation to conservation. He is currently working on projects studying marine vertebrates, and the design and utility of marine protected areas for them, emphasizing the effects of climate change on marine animals and the sustainability of incidental mortality and directed harvests of marine animals.

Johnston is lead author on the newly published paper, ‘The Effects of Climate Change on Harp Seals (Pagophilus groenlandicus),’ and if its conclusions are correct, continuing the east coast commercial seal hunt, (or “cull”, as it is often characterized by governments) could stress targeted populations beyond recovery.

David W. Johnston in the first half.

And; former Gorilla Radio guest, Richard Boyce will present his new film, ‘Rainforest – The Limit of Splendour’ at this year’s Victoria Film Festival. Richard is a long-time island social justice and environment activist, whose kayak trip through Vancouver Island’s pristine East Creek and Klaskish Inlet with Ingmar Lee led to the seven year odyssey of exploration culminating in the film. He has been touring festivals across the country, with ‘Raincoast,’ screening in Montreal, Vancouver, and winning the Mountain Culture Film Award at Whistler.

Richard Boyce and the limits of splendour in the second half.

And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will join us at the bottom of the hour to bring us newz from our city’s streets and beyond. But first, David W. Johnston and the effects of climate change, and political policy stagnation, on Canada’s east coast Harp Seals.

Chris Cook hosts Gorilla Radio, airing live every Monday, 5-6pm Pacific Time. In Victoria at 101.9FM, 104.3 cable, and on the internet at: http://cfuv.uvic.ca. Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Kim Ives, Don Staniford, Janine Bandcroft Jan. 30, 2012

This week: Kim Ives is founder of, and contributing editor to Haiti Liberté, a newspaper with offices in Haiti and New York, and has more than twenty years experience reporting with the paper, Haiti Progrès, and hosts the weekly, WBAI New York radio program, ‘Haiti: The Struggle Continues.’ Kim also hosts Haitian TV’s ‘Kafou Verite,’ produced by Haiti Liberté, and is a filmmaker who has collaborated on many films documenting human rights abuses, trade struggle, and conflicts between the island’s peasant farmers and corrupt State enterprises, and has contributed to the books, ‘Dangerous Crossroads,’ ‘The Haiti Files,’ and Haiti: A Slave Revolution.’ His most recent is ‘Tectonic Shifts.’ Kim Ives in the first half. And; it’s a case that could break new ground in the titanic battle to remove Atlantic Salmon fish farms from the waters of the coast of B.C. Right now, Don Staniford is being sued by Mainstream Canada, a subsidiary of Cermaq, a fish farm trans-national whose single majority stock-holder is the Norwegian government. Mainstream lawyers assert Staniford “disseminated and published defamatory and false statements about the company”on the Global Alliance Against Industrial Aqauaculture, or GAAIA site. GAAIA’s web server dropped the site under pressure, but it has now been replaced by the less noxious(?) Salmonfarmingkills.com. Don Staniford and B.C.’s “Salmon versus Goliath” in the second half. And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will join us at the bottom of the hour to bring us up to speed with the goings on on Victoria’s streets and beyond. Chris Cook hosts Gorilla Radio, airing live every Monday, 5-6pm Pacific Time, in Victoria at 101.9FM, 104.3 cable. He also serves as a contributing editor to the web news site, http://www.pacificfreepress.com.

Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Silver Donald Cameron, Brandy Gallagher, Janine Bandcroft Jan. 23, 2012

This week: Silver Donald Cameron is a Canadian educator, activist, playwright, journalist, long-time columnist for the Halifax Sunday Herald, and the author of scores of radio and television scripts. Among his 17 book titles are: ‘A Million Futures,’ ‘Sailing Away from Winter,’ ‘Sniffing the Coast,’ as well as ‘The Living Beach,’ and ‘The Education of Everett Richardson,’ both recognized as being among Atlantic Canada’s 100 Greatest Books. Silver Donald Cameron’s latest venture is The Green Interview, an innovative web journalism site focusing on the environment, and he’s currently on a Nova Scotia-wide lecture tour promoting energy efficiency and consumer best practices.

Silver Donald Cameron in the first half.

And; almost everyone can talk a good green game, but what happens when it comes to following up the palaver?

OUR Ecovillage is where the bicycle rubber meets the bike trail. A 25 acre sustainable living demonstration site and education centre, located in Shawnigan Lake, just up the road from Victoria, OUR Ecovillage has been living the green dream, while training countless others in the ways of living they can employ to lessen their load on the environment. From food security and alternative building models, to teaching people how to live and work cooperatively, the project emphasizes it is; “by community, for community, through community.” It all sounds ideal; but, there’s a problem in paradise.

Brandy Gallagher is co-founder and developer of OUR Ecovillage, and is a member of TOPIA, The Sustainable Learning Community Institute. Brandy Gallagher and saving a village to save US in the second half.

And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will join us from up in the beautiful Cowichan Valley environs at the bottom of the hour to bring us up to speed with some of the stories from our city’s streets and beyond occurring over the past week. But first, Silver Donald Cameron and the Green Interview; conversations with people, and encounters with ideas that are re-inventing the World.

Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Larry Hannant, Gilad Atzmon, Janine Bandcroft Jan. 16, 2012

This week: It's a story that may well have been lost. History instructor and award-winning author, Larry Hannant discovered the nearly forgotten manuscript for 'Champagne and Meatballs: Adventures of a Canadian Communist,' a compendium of journalist Bert Whyte's articles, letters, and remembrances over the most politically turbulent decades of the 20th Century, bringing to light a unique angle on a period of this country's history that resonates with an eerily familiar ring today.

Larry Hannant in the first half.

And; Gilad Atzmon's new book, 'The Wandering Who? A Study of Jewish Identity Politics' has received raves and rages.

Its publisher says 'The Wandering Who?' raises; "[S]ome of the most difficult and contentious issues of today…" examining; "[T]ribal aspects embedded in Jewish secular discourse, both Zionist and anti Zionist; the 'holocaust religion'; the meaning of 'history' and 'time' within the Jewish political discourse; the anti-Gentile ideologies entangled within different forms of secular Jewish political discourse and even with the Jewish left."

It's a book, international jurist and UN Special Rapporteur for Occupied Palestinian Territories, Professor Richard Falk calls; "A transformative story told with unflinching integrity that all (especially Jews) who care about real peace, as well as their own identity, should not only read, but reflect upon and discuss widely."

Gilad Atzmon and 'The Wandering Who? A Study Of Jewish Identity Politics' in the second half.

And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will join us at the bottom of the hour to bring us newz from the city's streets and beyond. But first Larry Hannant and the memoir of political activist extraordinaire, Bert Whyte, 'Champagne and Meatballs: Adventures of a Canadian Communist.'

Ape Speaks with Gilad Atzmon Jan. 15, 2012

Gilad Atzmon’s New Book: The Wandering Who? A Study Of Jewish Identity Politics

Jewish identity is tied up with some of the most difficult and contentious issues of today. The purpose in this book is to open many of these issues up for discussion. Since Israel defines itself openly as the ‘Jewish State’, we should ask what the notions of ’Judaism’, ‘Jewishness’, ‘Jewish culture’ and ‘Jewish ideology’ stand for. Gilad examines the tribal aspects embedded in Jewish secular discourse, both Zionist and anti Zionist; the ‘holocaust religion’; the meaning of ‘history’ and ‘time’ within the Jewish political discourse; the anti-Gentile ideologies entangled within different forms of secular Jewish political discourse and even within the Jewish left. He questions what it is that leads Diaspora Jews to identify themselves with Israel and affiliate with its politics. The devastating state of our world affairs raises an immediate demand for a conceptual shift in our intellectual and philosophical attitude towards politics, identity politics and history.

Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Briony Penn, Steve Anderson, Janine Bandcroft Jan. 9, 2012

This week: I spoke last month with Briony Penn about her article appearing in Victoria’s Focus Magazine exposing Ministry of Fisheries and Oceans’, (those same that brought you Canada’s East coast cod collapse not so many years ago) mismanagement of West coast herring quotas.

Briony Penn and putting a net around the Honourable James Ashfield, the minister supposedly responsible, before it’s too late in the first half.

And; Canada too is introducing legislation allowing the Canadian government, (and its unnamed friends) creep into your computer to find out just about everything it thinks it needs to know about you.

Naturally, it’s all for the safety of the little children. Called ‘Lawful Access,’ the bills soon to be before the House will, in the words of Open Media, “make online spying the norm in Canada and seriously threaten the privacy and security of all Canadians.”

Steve Anderson is founder and Executive Director of OpenMedia.ca, an open internet advocacy collective behind the Stop Online Spying campaign.

Steve Anderson on the growing resistance to codified government surveillance in the second half.

And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will join us at the bottom of the hour to bring us up to speed with what’s going on on Victoria’s streets and beyond. But first, reprising Briony Penn on the state of B.C.’s coastal herring.

Chris Cook hosts Gorilla Radio, airing live every Monday, 5-6pm Pacific Time. In Victoria at 101.9FM, 104.3 cable, and on the internet at: http://cfuv.uvic.ca. Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Jon Elmer, Ann Emmett, Janine Bandcroft Jan 2, 2012

This week: According to the Palestine Liberation Organization, Israel killed more than 180 Palestinians last year, and dispossessed thousands more. The PLO also credits the Israel Occupation Authority with green lighting the construction of 26,837 new settlement units on Palestinian lands, while confiscating thousands of acres of land, and razing to the ground nearly 500 homes.

Those sobering figures will set the stage this week for meetings between Israeli and Palestinian negotiators in Amman, where they hope to set an agenda for peace talks. Meanwhile, the Israeli daily, Ha’aretz reports the Israeli Defense Force is planning a successor to 2008’s infamous Operation Cast Lead, where as many as fifteen hundred Palestinians perished.

Jon Elmer is a Canadian writer and photojournalist specializing in the Middle East and Canadian foreign and military policy. He’s reported from more than a dozen countries throughout the Arab world, and has lived in and reported from Bethlehem, Occupied Palestine for the better part of the last decade. His writing and photographs can be found at his site, JonElmer.ca.

Jon Elmer in the first half.

And; while the collapse of the world’s banking system made headlines last year, little is reported about the state of Canada’s banks, or the role played in banking by the Canadian State. Shortly before the holidays, the Committee for Monetary and Economic Reform, or COMER, filed suit in Federal Court, charging the government of Canada restore the role of the Bank of Canada to its intended purpose, and challenging the federal government’s accounting methods and calculations as pertains to the tabling of the budget and issuing of “tax credits” to big business and other select taxpayers.

Ann Emmett is named as a co-plaintiff with COMER. Confronting global finance in the Canadian courts with Ann Emmett in the second half.

And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will join us to bring newz from the City’s streets and beyond. But first, Jon Elmer and a very New Year in an ancient land.

Chris Cook hosts Gorilla Radio, airing live every Monday, 5-6pm Pacific Time. In Victoria at 101.9FM, 104.3 cable, and on the internet at: http://cfuv.uvic.ca. Gorilla Radio X-Mas Show with Chris Cook and Janine Bandcroft Dec. 26, 2011

Welcome to the annual Gorilla Radio X-Mas Special, wherein we leave the show format’s rutted path to bloviate, bellow and blatherskite on the state of the world in the year past, and sound a knell warning of what 2012 holds in store should we stay the disastrous course charted by the maniacs on the bridge.

There’ll be music and such, and Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV broadcaster will join in the gas-baggery too at the bottom of the hour.

But first, before beginning the wind, an annual tradition with Ini Kimoze, and all he really wanted for Christmas.

Chris Cook hosts Gorilla Radio, airing live every Monday, 5-6pm Pacific Time. In Victoria at 101.9FM, 104.3 cable, and on the internet at: http://cfuv.uvic.ca. Vladivostok Mutiny Dec 21 2010.ff

On the morning of December 21st, 1918,
French-Canadian conscripts in the 259th Battalion
of the Canadian Expeditionary Force (Siberia)
mutinied at the corner of Fort and Quadra Street
in downtown Victoria. They refused to embark for
service in a new theatre of war – the Russian
port of Vladivostok and Siberia, to aid the White
Russian forces fighting the Bolsheviks in the
Russian Civil War. The war on the Western Front
had ended six weeks earlier, prompting sharp
debates within Canadian society and the military
force itself.

But at the point of the bayonet, the mutinous men
were forced to embark for Russia, exceeding the
powers granted under Canada’s conscription law,
the Military Service Act 1917. The ringleaders
were shackled together in the bottom of the ship,
the SS Teesta, and received sentences of between
30 days and 3 years imprisonment with hard labour
for “Joining in a mutiny while on active service
in his majesty’s armed forces.”

This year, on the 93rd anniversary of the mutiny,
we are gathering to remember this forgotten
moment in the history of Victoria, French and
English Canada and the world. The event will
feature the story of the conscripts and mutiny
itself, a moment of silence for the fallen
soldiers of the Siberian Expedition, a musical
interlude, and a public call for a formal apology
for the families and a full pardon from the
federal government for the French-Canadian
soldiers wrongfully convicted of mutiny at
Victoria.

Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Ingmar Lee, Janine Bandcroft Dec. 19, 2011

This week: The public and professional input period, or evidentiary hearings of the Cohen Commission ends today. The Commission had already wound down, when evidence of a deadly virus present here in the Pacific Northeast was made too public to ignore. It all paints another picture of corporate-government cooperation to obfuscate truth at the expense of the environment and public safety.

Ingmar Lee is a long-time environment defender at the front lines of staying the destructive hand of industry and enlightening the ignorant to the great dangers facing his cherished Pacific Northwest ecosystem.

Ingmar Lee in the first half.

And; I cheered, “Hooray” last week when I heard of the death of Christopher Hitchens, exactly as I cheer the departure of all who support the endless wars waged against the, mainly, women and children of the world. Hitchens, for all his accomplished writing, brilliance as public orator, and punishing effectiveness as a pugilistic debater was in the end, if not just, then merely another war monger. A few thoughts on the legacy of Hitch in the second half.

And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will join us at the bottom of the hour to bring us news from the city’s streets and beyond.

But first, Ingmar Lee and B.C.’s War of the Waters.

Chris Cook hosts Gorilla Radio, airing live every Monday, 5-6pm Pacific Time. In Victoria at 101.9FM, 104.3 cable, and on the internet at: http://cfuv.uvic.ca. Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Briony Penn, Janine Bandcroft Dec. 12, 2011

This week: Worse though than those that would risk the living world out of ignorance, or for personal enrichment is a political process, our political process, displaying a single-minded determination to wreck the environment and all that dwell within it. Just such a case was revealed recently by naturalist, geographer, journalist, and author Briony Penn.

Listen. Hear.

In an article appearing in Victoria’s Focus Magazine, Penn exposes Department of Fisheries and Oceans, (those same that brought you Canada’s East coast cod collapse not so many years ago) mismanagement of West coast herring quotas.

Briony Penn and putting a net around the Honourable James Ashfield, the minister supposedly responsible before it’s too late in the first half.

And; Officially known as the ‘Perimeter Security and Economic Competitiveness Action Plan’ it’s the final fruition of the long sought continentalist vision of “Fortress North America.” It is what Canadian nationalists like David Orchard describe as the greatest existential threat Canada. It is an act of finishing through treachery what force of arms could not accomplish; conquest by deception.

Whither Canada under the ‘Perimeter Security and Economic Competitiveness Action Plan’ in the second half.

And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will join us at the bottom of the hour to bring us news from the city’s streets and beyond. But first, the DFO caving to industry at the peril of our wild West coast ecosystem.

Chris Cook hosts Gorilla Radio, airing live every Monday, 5-6pm Pacific Time. In Victoria at 101.9FM, 104.3 cable, and on the internet at: http://cfuv.uvic.ca. Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Walter M. Brasch, Franklin Lopez, Janine Bandcroft Dec. 5, 2011

This week: Walter M. Brasch is an award-winning syndicated social issues columnist, former newspaper and magazine reporter and editor, multi-media writer and producer, retired professor of mass communications and journalism, and the author of eighteen books. His latest is ‘Before the First Snow: Stories from the Revolution’, the tale of “greed, corruption, and intrigue, set against the backdrop of social protest…”

Walter M. Brasch and the “compelling story of history and contemporary American culture and values” in the first half.

And; Franklin López is an award-winning filmmaker, artist, media activist, and founding member of subMedia, whose latest project is to, quote: “document resistance movements that are working towards stopping the flows of hydro carbons, mineral extraction, natural resources and capital, through grassroots and underground organizing.”

Franklin’s films include: ‘Join the Resistance! Fall in Love, the 2005 post-Katrina video remix ‘George Bush Don’t Like Black People,’ and his latest is, ‘END:CIV,’ inspired by the writings of Derrick Jensen. López also created the on-line TV news series, ‘It’s the End of the World as We Know It and I Feel Fine.’

Franklin López and Stopping the Flows in the second half.

And; Victoria Street Newz publisher, and CFUV broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will join us at the bottom of the hour to bring us newz from the city’s streets and beyond. But first, Walter M. Brasch and remembering an American Spring, before the first snow.

Chris Cook hosts Gorilla Radio, airing live every Monday, 5-6pm Pacific Time. In Victoria at 101.9FM, 104.3 cable, and on the internet at: http://cfuv.uvic.ca. Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Paul Cienfuegos, Alex Roslin, Janine Bandcroft Nov. 28, 2011

This week: Paul Cienfuegos is an intrepid activist citizen, who had been in the trenches, fighting numerous single-issue battles for the environment, and indigenous peoples’ rights, and for sane alternatives to disastrous war and energy policies for decades when he says he realized, quote; “[A]lmost every issue I had ever worked on was a mere symptom of corporate rule.”

Since that epiphany, Paul Cienfuegos has worked to rally individuals and communities that they, while continuing to pull the babes from the water, venture upstream and arrest at the headwaters the source of social and environmental outrage.

Paul Cienfuegos in the first half.

And; where the name Chernobyl still resonates today, the nearer and many times more dire nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear facility is hardly acknowledged not nine months after a calamitous earthquake and tsunami sent three of the reactors there into meltdown.

Alex Roslin is a freelance journalist, television news producer, and the current president of the Canadian Centre for Investigative Reporting. He’s a three time winner of the Canadian Association of Journalists awards for reporting, and has received numerous more nominations for both CAJ and National Magazine Awards. He recently published, ‘What Are Officials Hiding About Fukushima?’ an expose into that disaster’s silent aftermath.

Alex Roslin and perhaps the greatest nuclear disaster you never heard about in the second half.

And; Victoria Street Newz publisher, and CFUV broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will join us at the bottom of the hour to bring us news from our city’s streets and beyond. But first, Paul Cienfuegos and separating the baby from the (industrially contaminated) corporate bathwater.

Chris Cook hosts Gorilla Radio, airing live every Monday, 5-6pm Pacific Time. In Victoria at 101.9FM, 104.3 cable, and on the internet at: http://cfuv.uvic.ca.
