This week marks the launch of a cross-Canada lecture tour by renowned Israeli history scholar, Ilan Pappe. Pappe is currently a professor at the College of Social Sciences and International Studies at the University of Exeter, and is the author of many books dedicated to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, most notably, 'The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine.' His Canadian tour, 'The False Paradigm of Peace: Revisiting the Palestine Question' is sponsored by Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) and concludes this Saturday, May 5th with double-header engagements in Victoria and Vancouver; the first being right here at the University of Victoria's David Strong auditorium at 12 noon. Tom Woodley is the President of the CJPME, and joins us in the first half. And; According to the Coalition to Oppose the Arms Trade, or COAT, there are more than 16 million Canadians sharing responsibility for Israeli atrocities because we have been, quote: "[F]orced to invest [...] retirement savings in corporations with varying degrees of complicity in Israel’s system of apartheid, its occupation of Palestinian lands, its military/"security" industries, and its aerial bombardments of Lebanon (2006) and Gaza (2008-2009)." COAT is behind a campaign to get the CPP and its nebulous investment arm, the CPP Investment Board, to cease war profiteering and divest from arms and "security" companies all together. Richard Sanders is founder and coordinator of COAT and serves as editor to its publication Press for Conversion. Richard Sanders and stripping the CPP's war portfolio in the second half. And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV radio broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will join us at the bottom of the hour to bring us newz from the city's streets and beyond. Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, David W. Johnston, Richard Boyce, Janine Bandcroft Feb. 6, 2012

Date 2012-02-07

This week: David W. Johnston is a biological oceanographer and conservation biologist at Duke University's Marine Lab. His focus is on framing ecology and the habitat needs of marine animals in relation to conservation. He is currently working on projects studying marine vertebrates, and the design and utility of marine protected areas for them, emphasizing the effects of climate change on marine animals and the sustainability of incidental mortality and directed harvests of marine animals. Johnston is lead author on the newly published paper, 'The Effects of Climate Change on Harp Seals (Pagophilus groenlandicus),' and if its conclusions are correct, continuing the east coast commercial seal hunt, (or "cull", as it is often characterized by governments) could stress targeted populations beyond recovery. David W. Johnston in the first half. And; former Gorilla Radio guest, Richard Boyce will present his new film, 'Rainforest - The Limit of Splendour' at this year's Victoria Film Festival. Richard is a long-time island social justice and environment activist, whose kayak trip through Vancouver Island's pristine East Creek and Klaskish Inlet with Ingmar Lee led to the seven year odyssey of exploration culminating in the film. He has been touring festivals across the country, with 'Raincoast,' screening in Montreal, Vancouver, and winning the Mountain Culture Film Award at Whistler. Richard Boyce and the limits of splendour in the second half. And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will join us at the bottom of the hour to bring us newz from our city's streets and beyond. But first, David W. Johnston and the effects of climate change, and political policy stagnation, on Canada's east coast Harp Seals. Chris Cook hosts Gorilla Radio, airing live every Monday, 5-6pm Pacific Time. In Victoria at 101.9FM, 104.3 cable, and on the internet at: http://cfuv.uvic.ca. He also serves as a contributing editor to the web news site, http://www.pacificfreepress.com. Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Paul Cienfuegos, Alex Roslin, Janine Bandcroft Nov. 28, 2011

Date 2011-11-29

This week: Paul Cienfuegos is an intrepid activist citizen, who had been in the trenches, fighting numerous single-issue battles for the environment, and indigenous peoples' rights, and for sane alternatives to disastrous war and energy policies for decades when he says he realized, quote; "[A]lmost every issue I had ever worked on was a mere symptom of corporate rule." Since that epiphany, Paul Cienfuegos has worked to rally individuals and communities that they, while continuing to pull the babes from the water, venture upstream and arrest at the headwaters the source of social and environmental outrage. Paul Cienfuegos in the first half. And; where the name Chernobyl still resonates today, the nearer and many times more dire nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear facility is hardly acknowledged not nine months after a calamitous earthquake and tsunami sent three of the reactors there into meltdown. Alex Roslin is a freelance journalist, television news producer, and the current president of the Canadian Centre for Investigative Reporting. He's a three time winner of the Canadian Association of Journalists awards for reporting, and has received numerous more nominations for both CAJ and National Magazine Awards. He recently published, 'What Are Officials Hiding About Fukushima?' an expose into that disaster's silent aftermath. Alex Roslin and perhaps the greatest nuclear disaster you never heard about in the second half. And; Victoria Street Newz publisher, and CFUV broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will join us at the bottom of the hour to bring us news from our city's streets and beyond. But first, Paul Cienfuegos and separating the baby from the (industrially contaminated) corporate bathwater.
