Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Zoe Blunt, David Swanson, Janine Bandcroft June 3, 2013

Date 2013-06-04

Well, heeeee's baaack! With the vengeful whine of chainsaws, and the awe-inspiring thunder in the woods accompanying orchestrated clearcut operations, Ender Ilkay, frustrated West Van. wildland developer, the same who once promised hundreds of luxurious "cabin" abodes abutting the Juan de Fuca Provincial Park just west of Sooke, is returned like an ancient day prophesy of pestilence to come, fulfilling his promise to clearcut what he was forbidden to pave. For the record; Ender says he's sorry to see it, but that's the way it goes. And, he promises more clearcut logging to come. Zoe Blunt is a long-time South Island-based environmental defender and activist/organizer. Zoe's past campaigns with Wild Coast, VicFAN and other organized manifestations include: an attempt to forestall the so-called Bear Mountain development, (a failed effort that culminated spectacularly in a massive SWAT team assault on three tree-sitters at the site of the long-derelict but soon-to-be-revived Spencer Road overpass); the successful turn-around of mega-developer at large, Ender Ilkay's Marine Trail Resort; conducting activist and non-violent resistance workshops; and participation with the Caravan to Wet-suwet-'en, an annual congregation at the planned site of the pipeline confluence for the controversial Pacific Trail Pipeline project. Blunt was also instrumental in convincing VanCity's ethical investments arm to disinvest itself of Enbridge-related investment vehicles. Zoe Blunt has appeared on this show many times over the years, and joins us again in the first segment. And; he's waited in custody, sometimes under appalling conditions, for more than three years, but Private Bradley Manning's espionage and aiding the enemy trial began finally Monday at Fort Meade, Maryland. Manning has already admitted to being the source of hundreds of thousands of files released to Wikileaks. The Manning case has sparked protest around the world, and while some consider Bradley a hero comparable to Daniel Ellsberg, the man who leaked the Pentagon Papers during America's war againt Vietnam, others condemn him as a traitor who put his comrades in arms in harm's way. David Swanson is an activist, organizer, prolific essayist, journalist, broadcaster, and author whose book titles include: 'The Military Industrial Complex at 50,' 'When the World Outlawed War,' and 'War Is a Lie' among others. He's the host of Talk Nation Radio, and blogs from DavidSwanson.org and WarIsACrime.org. David Swanson and Bradley Manning's, sort of, day in court in the second half. And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV Radio broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will be here at the bottom of the hour to bring us up to speed with some of what's good to do in and around the capital city, and beyond. But first, Zoe Blunt and the Ender of days in the woods near Juan de Fuca Provincial Park. Chris Cook hosts Gorilla Radio, airing live every Monday, 5-6pm Pacific Time. In Victoria at 101.9FM, and on the internet at: http://cfuv.uvic.ca. He also serves as a contributing editor to the web news site, http://www.pacificfreepress.com. Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Todd Miller, Chief Beau Dick, Kevin Neish, Janine Bandcroft Feb 11, 2013

Date 2013-02-12

'Fortress America,' the name dreamt up in the wake of 9/11 to reassure a nervous public, is more than a catchy PR slogan; it represents a sea change in the way the United States regards its place in the World. The manifestation of this shift is evidenced first by the militarization of police functions, and the reinforcement at its borders by both men and steel. Great barriers have long been in place along much of the States' southern perimeter, but now the circling of wagons includes too bulwarks against intrusion from the vast stretch marking the northern reaches of the country. Once proudly referred to as "the longest undefended border in the World," the Canada/U.S. border now bristles with newly fortified surveillance towers, manned by newly recruited Homeland security paramilitary troops, while thousands of ground sensors monitor areas between posts, and tireless aerial drones patrol overhead. But that is just the beginning of the changes to the "point(s) of pride" that once marked the demarcation between the famously friendly great nations of North America. Todd Miller has researched and written about U.S.-Mexican border issues for more than 10 years. He has worked on both sides of the border for BorderLinks in Tucson, Arizona, and Witness for Peace in Oaxaca, Mexico. He writes on border and immigration issues for the North America Congress on Latin America at its NACLA Report on the Americas at their blog, 'Border Wars,' and elsewhere. His first book, 'Border Patrol Nation' is currently in process and will be published by City Lights Books. In his article, 'Living in a Constitution-Free Zone: Drones, Surveillance Towers, Malls of the Spy State, and the National Security Police on the Northern Border' Miller looks at that other border. Todd Miller in the first segment. And; yesterday, Sunday February 10th, 2013 Hereditary Chief Beau Dick of the Kwakwaka'wakw nation completed the journey by foot from Alert Bay, near the top of Vancouver Island, to Victoria and the seat of the provincial power at the BC Legislature. Chief Dick led the 250 kilometre trek of family and supporters to emphasize opposition to the federal government's recent Bill C-45 that effectively erases environmental protections for massive energy extraction, and allows transportation through First Nations' lands without constitutionally mandated consultations. The long march was joined by the Salmon are Sacred coalition and was inspired in part by the First People's Idle No More movement. From the Ledge with a long march ended in the second half. And; long-time Victoria activist and rights defender Kevin Neish has arrived in Gaza. Kevin is there to participate as an international observer in some of the most often IDF-targeted areas of Gaza; farmer's fields and the narrowly proscribed Palestinian fishing grounds. Communication can be dodgy, but all going well, we'll hear from Kevin in the second half. And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV Radio broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will be here at the bottom of the hour to bring us newz from the city's streets and beyond. But first, Todd Miller and Living in a Constitution-Free Zone: Drones, Surveillance Towers, Malls of the Spy State, and the National Security Police on the Northern Border. Chris Cook hosts Gorilla Radio, airing live every Monday, 5-6pm Pacific Time. In Victoria at 101.9FM, and on the internet at: http://cfuv.uvic.ca. Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook and Janine Bandcroft Zero 12 Year-Ender

Date 2013-01-01

Welcome to GR's annual Year-Ender show. 2012 has come and nearly gone in record fashion. There were earth shaking events, sea and sky raking tempests, and e'er the sound of the pipes O' war heard 'cross t' hill and dale in many a-land and yonder. End of year updates, countdowns, and lists upon lists are surely found aplenty elsewhere, so this year, just here, we'd rather than look back at the year's top repeated stories, peer instead, a la Project Censored at deserving stories that received less, little, or no coverage. And, we'll feature music and nonsense. Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV Radio broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will too pop by at the bottom of the hour to ring in and wave out the new and old years. But first, a little music to set the calendrical tone from the Red Hot Chilli Pipers with Robbie Burns' annual paean to the passing year, Auld Lang Syne. Chris Cook hosts Gorilla Radio, airing live every Monday, 5-6pm Pacific Time. In Victoria at 101.9FM, and on the internet at: http://cfuv.uvic.ca. Gorilla Radio Zero-12 X-Mas Special

Date 2012-12-25

This Week on GR: Welcome to another Gorilla Radio X-mas show. Over the years, we've hosted quite a few of these, and this year as in past years, we'll again leave the usual show format to bring you music and pontifications on the state of things, favoured snippets from past shows, and Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV Radio broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will join us from her family's seasonal commemoration at the bottom of the hour. But first, a man who has become an annual tradition here, Ini Kamozy and his psalm of imprecation for those forgetting the true meaning of the day. Chris Cook hosts Gorilla Radio, airing live every Monday, 5-6pm Pacific Time. In Victoria at 101.9FM, and on the internet at: http://cfuv.uvic.ca. Ape Goes to Eco Warrior Screening

Date 2012-10-12

Went down to the University of Victoria to check out Jennifer Pickford's film Eco Warriors the Documentary, featuring local eco heroes Ingmar Lee, Zoe Blunt, and others. Here's a bit of the blurb from the filmmaker's website: www.pickfordproductions.com This documentary depicts the increasingly harsh treatment of people who protest against what they see as crimes to the environment. Today, protesters who were once described as environmental activists are being called ‘terrorists’, and environmental activism is being labeled ‘eco-terrorism’. Environmental activists being labeled as terrorists is an increasingly real threat since United States Federal Bureau of Investigation now includes a category for 'eco-terrorism' under its Domestic Terrorism Section. Many see the use of the term 'eco-terrorist' as a propaganda term devised by law-enforcement to criminalize or marginalize their protests.
