This week: Dawn Paley is a Canadian freelance journalist, filing stories from south of south of the border on the abuses of Canadian-flagged mining corporations, and the Canadian dimension to Mexico's so-called Drug War. She recently published a groundbreaking report exposing the sordid history and true intents behind the War on Drugs.
'Drug War Capitalism: Militarization & Economic Transformation in Colombia & Mexico' first appeared in Detroit's Against the Current magazine and provides a startling reality check into the nature of gangsterism on both sides of the nebulous divide we call international law.
Dawn Paley in the first half.
And; The Trans-Pacific Partnership recently held its 13th round of negotiations down in San Diego.
If the TPP isn't ringing any bells with you, don't despair, all but the tiniest percentile has known the dark truth about both the style and substance of the deal-making being struck between the United States and a couple handfuls of Pacific Rim nations. Canada too has signed on to the TPP, though strangely refusing to request a central role in the talks.
Lori Wallach is the director of Public Citizen's Global Trade Watch division and is co-author, with Ralph Nader and Michelle Sforza, of the books, 'The WTO: Five Years of Reasons to Resist Corporate Globalization,' and 'Whose Trade Organization: A Comprehensive Guide to the World Trade Organization,' co-authored again with Ralph Nader and Patrick Woodall, and 'Mai: The Multilateral Agreement on Investment and the Threat to American Freedom' with Tony Clarke and Maude Barlow.

This week: Israeli Defense Forces spent much of last week punishing Gaza with rockets and bombs, initially in retaliation for an attack last Monday launched from Egypt into the Sinai Peninsula, far to the south. As was the case in August of last year, when eight Israelis were killed outside the town of Eilat, the IDF immediately connected this latest attack with Gaza, resulting in air attacks that have killed at least nine to date.
Egypt interceded in mid-week, brokering a ceasefire between the Hamas government in Gaza and Israel, but rockets and mortars fired from third parties in Gaza and IDF retaliation threatened to unravel that effort.
It all underscores the volatile situation in the region, made even more so perhaps by the naming of Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohamed Morsi as Egypt's new president.
Jon Elmer is a Canadian writer and freelance photojournalist who has lived in and reported from Occupied Palestine for the better part of the last decade. Jon's work can be found featured across the internet at Al Jazeera English, the InterPress Service, and Le Monde diplomatique among others, and at his site, JonElmer.ca.
Jon Elmer and interesting times continuing in Gaza and the Middle East in the first half.
And; the practices of Canadian mining companies abroad are increasingly in the global spotlight, if less often featured at home. From Madagascar, Continental Africa, and Asia, to Papua New Guinea, Central America, Mexico and right in Canada, mining outfits, many flying flags of mere convenience, are wreaking havoc on the natural world, despoiling the environment and ruining societies with the misfortune of existing above the objects of the industry's desire.
Worse than this is the complicity, in many cases, of the Canadian government.
Jennifer Moore is the Latin America Program Coordinator for Mining Watch Canada. Jen spent years in Latin America as a freelance print and broadcast journalist, specializing in communities affected by Canadian-financed mining companies.
Jennifer Moore and a victory for Ecuador in the second half.

Listen. Hear.
And; with school set to resume in British Columbia tomorrow, there is what promises to be a battle Royale brewing between the provincial Liberals and the BC Teachers Federation.
There are already rumours of a September work stoppage, and already veiled threats of back to work legislation being quickly implemented by the provincial government should teachers walk out. The teachers say they are determined to make a difference for kids with this round of bargaining.

This week: Long-time friend of the show, and champion of the environment here in B.C. and further afield, Ingmar Lee. Ingmar is a world traveller, who between journeys spent 20 years planting trees in this province, more than a million of them by his estimation. He recently ascended the sixty meter flag pole on the legislature lawn to raise a banner decrying the provincial governor, Gordon Campbell's feting as force for Green at Copenhagen; and he stands charged for the crime of disrupting another bombing campaign, subterranean blasting done, it is suspected, to provide a complete resource map for the drillers of the oil and gas industry. Ingmar Lee in the first half.
