It's said; "March comes in like a lion..." and from Ireland to Norway to Vancouver the month begins with the 'March for Wild Salmon,' an international link-up of citizens', environmental, and indigenous groups roaring its determination to halt the spread of the transglobal fish farming industry.
Vancouver's mobilization is led by the Indigenous Salmon Defenders, kicking off a month-long campaign consisting of a series of events, culminating on the final day of March with a global vigil for wild salmon. The timing is no accident, as the coming Spring is the most crucial moment for the next generation of salmon smolt, who must transit a veritable gauntlet of disease-ridden, sea lice spawning fish feedlots dotting their migratory route to the open ocean.
Dawn Morrison is founder of the Indigenous Food Sovereignty Network, a group formed in conjunction with the BC Food Systems Network. She also coordinates the Vancouver Native Health Society's Urban Aboriginal Gardens and Kitchen Project. Morrison is too a leader for Indigenous community engagement in association with the BC Bioregional Food Assistance Planning Project, and she'll be at the head of the March for Wild Salmon. She says the message is simple: “Stop Norwegian Fish Farms from Killing Wild Salmon!”

And; fully three years since the great earthquake that destroyed much of Haiti's capital, Port au Prince thousands still remain homeless, jobless, and dependent on foreign aid - such as it is - to survive.The usual, and suspect, agencies are all represented in Haiti, chiefly among them being the United Nations' Minustah, or "stabilization mission."
It's long been believed in the country, it was Nepalese soldiers seconded to Minustah who introduced cholera into the water supply downstream of their base, setting off an epidemic so far credited with killing at least 8,000 Haitians, and sickening many hundreds of thousands more. Though the provenance of the outbreak was obvious, the United Nations has steadfastly denied responsibility. Investigations began, eventually finding, fully two and a half years after the fact, the UN's troopers were indeed the source of the disaster.
Last week, claims for compensation, duly filed by the Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti, or IJDH on behalf of the those afflicted, were rejected out of hand by the UN, with that organization's number one, Ban Ki-moon expressing "profound sympathy" for the suffering caused by the worst outbreak of its kind in the world today, while refusing to accept responsibility for it.

Over the weekend, the Finnish-flagged M/S Estelle attempted to ferry aid into the besieged Gaza Strip, and like previous attempts was intercepted by the Israeli navy in international waters, its crew and passengers taken into port at Ashdod and imprisoned.
As of Sunday October 21st, there is little word of the conditions of captivity for former Canadian MP Jim Manley, though a release from organizers of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition confirms: Some of the Estelle's crew has been deported to Greece and Italy.
Reports from Israeli activists on the ship claim passengers were "tasered" by the Israeli boarding party. For its part, Israeli authorities lied about the cargo on board the Estelle, maintaining the ship contained "no humanitarian aid."
The Estelle's attempt to break the years-old blockade of Gaza comes on the heels of last week's publication of Israeli documents confirming that state's practice of a calorie counting regimen restricting the amount of food allowed into the Gaza enclave based on an estimated minimal caloric intake per person necessary to avoid wide-spread starvation. Also known as the "Gaza Diet," the revelation is not news to Palestinians, or most Israelis, but does present an international embarrassment to the government, which has always denied such a policy existed.

And; the long-awaited October 22 manifestation is happening even now in downtown Victoria. The event, in part organized by the newly formed, Defend Our Coast coalition, and supported by a variety of international Environmental Non-Government Organizations hoped to rally British Columbians and others concerned about the Enbridge Gateway project, a massive pipeline proposal to sluice Tar Sands condensate-soaked bitumen to the port of Kitimat on its way to a trans-pacific voyage to the Asian market.
The format and nature of this demonstration is unique in my experience, and it has sparked some heated debate within the environmental community. I went down there this morning to record my impressions and those of the participants. Defending Our Coast in the second segment.

Went down to see journalist and author, Jeb Sprague on his book, Paramilitarism and the Assault on Democracy in Haiti' at the University of Victoria Saturday.
As we ready to welcome Fall and the 2012 school year here at UVic, the Occupy movement is readying itself for a second year of mobilization against the gross disparities of the economic system. From ground zero at Wall Street in New York, and financial districts around the United States, (and in Canada too) last year's explosion of dissent and demonstration leaves behind hundreds of stories. Many of these stories went viral on the internet as they happened, as they revealed police state styled repression and brutality most Americans haven't seen since the Vietnam War protests of the 1960's.
Arguably, the worst of that repression was witnessed at Occupy Oakland.
Kevin Pina is an American journalist and filmmaker who has reported from Haiti on and off for more than twenty years, and who lived in the capital for more than seven years. From his early days as a KPFA radio reporter documenting the human rights abuses in Port au Prince's poorest neighbourhoods, to covering the initial 1991 coup d'état against populist president, Jean-Bertrand Aristide to his own imprisonment there in 2005, Pina has borne witness in a way few foreign correspondents can equal. His film titles include: 'El Salvador: In the Name of Democracy,' 'Amazonia: Voices from the Rainforest,' 'Haiti: Harvest of Hope,' 'Haiti: The UNtold Story,' and 'HAITI: We Must Kill the Bandits.'

And; nearly eighteen months have passed since the earthquake and tsunami disaster that killed tens of thousands in Japan, and rendered Fukushima's Daiichi nuclear facility a smoldering wreckage. Though you would be hard-pressed to find the story in your local paper, or covered on the nightly newscasts; a year and a half later, the smashed plant spews radiation still into the sea and atmosphere with no near end to it in sight. Worse yet, there is tonnes of spent nuclear rods in cooling pools at Daiichi, pools that could fail catastrophically in another earthquake.
Steven Starr is a senior scientist at Physicians for Social Responsibility and an associate member of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation. He is the Director of the Clinical Laboratory Science Program at the University of Missouri, and a medical technologist who has spent years detailing the real and possible effects of the nuclear weapons issue from his site, www.NuclearDarkness.org. Appearing at the UN and other fora to give expert testimony on the environmental consquences of waging, and readying for, nuclear war, Starr has, since the Fukushima calamity, collaborated with renowned Japanese diplomat Akio Matsumura, founder and Secretary General of the Global Forum of Spiritual and Parliamentary Leaders on Human Survival, who famously warned recently of the precarious situation at Daiichi's reactor #4.

This week: Last week, the European Union came through for Israel, upgrading special trade status, strengthening economic ties on myriad fronts, and reversing trade penalties for the Gaza massacre of 2008. Most incredibly, all this was undertaken in violation of the EU's own European Neighbourhood Policy that requires "preferred trading partner" status be reserved for those nations respecting international human rights, democratic values, and the humanitarian obligations expected of civilized governments. And all this without AIPAC, or a November election.

Today at noon, the Women in Black held their Hiroshima Day vigil downtown at the tourist office, across from the Empress Hotel to remember Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the role Canada played in the production of the bombs that were needlessly dropped upon the people living there.
