Welcome to GR, etc. With BC's provincial election less than 24 hours away, there's one issue that we can cover without fear of trespassing on media elections gag orders. Neither of the two parties likely to lead the next government oppose open-pen fish farming in the province.
Despite mountains of evidence suggesting the folly of concentrated feed lots for fish; the obvious ill effects on the fish bred in cramped captivity; dubious health benefit claims of a human diet including these drugged and unnaturally sustained creatures; proven dangers pathogens from these operations pose to wild fish; the standing on its head of the precautionary principle required to keep this industry afloat, with the many known and suspected negative effects it represents, the BC Liberals and BC New Democratic Party both essentially support business as usual.
It's all so much of more of the same for BC-based scientist and wild salmon crusader Alexandra Morton, who last week, along with Ecojustice filed a best practices law suit against salmon farming giant Marine Harvest and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, (DFO) for the alleged "transfer of diseased farmed Atlantic salmon into waters shared by wild fish." As disturbing as the ramifications of Marine Harvest's willful, and possibly illegal, endangering of wild salmon in this manner are, (not to mention the apparent lackadaisical policing of its own policies by the Department of Oceans and Fisheries appear to be in this case, and others) more so is what this case reveals about another frightening virus, joining the already devastating and universally feared ISA virus afflicting farmed salmon stock, and its possible release into the wild.
Alexandra Morton back in court in the first half.
And; this May 15th marks Nakba Day for those within occupied Palestine, and the millions more comprising the Palestinian diaspora. Nakba Day's modern manifestation commemorates the day after Israel's 1948 declaration of independence.

This week: Much has been written about the demise of Canada's fisheries, on both coasts. Accusations of gross incompetence on the part of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, greed on the part of local fishers and canneries, and foreign over-fishing are all cited as reasons contributing to the crash of the cod down East. A familiar, confused casting of blame exists here too to explain away the fading of the Pacific salmon and herring.
While not precluding the role rampant corporate greed, or the insurmountable ignorance and consistent incompetence of the DFO has played, long-time West Coast marine research scientist and ecology defender, Alexandra Morton wants to make one thing perfectly clear: The undoing of the Pacific wild salmon was no mistake. In her recent article, 'Salmon Feedlots - this was not a mistake,' Morton revisits the chronicles of the wild salmon's betrayal kept by the United Fisherman’s and Allied Workers Union in their newspaper, 'The Fisherman.'
What's revealed there is a corporate and government conspiracy amounting to a genus-cide and undoing of a way of life for both First Nations and settler fishing communities dependent on salmon, and an infinitely greater crime committed against an entire ecosystem.

And; Israel held elections last week. The results surprised many, but more surprising yet perhaps is analysis of what the elections mean for Israel's, and the Middle East's future. Jon Elmer is a Canadian freelance photo-journalist who has lived in and reported from Occupied Palestine for more than a decade. His work appears at Al Jazeera, the Inter Press Service, and Electronic Intifada among others. He's also appeared in myriad magazines and contributed chapters to several books covering the middle east.

Clearly we are living in an age of mass dementia. Over the weekend, scofflaw Israel rained bombs and missiles upon the heads of civilian homes, civil infrastructure, media studios, hospitals, and shot up anything that moved through the streets of Gaza City.
While there is nothing particular new about that, after all, Israel has treated the Gaza Strip and its benighted citizens like so many concentration camp inmates for years, picking them off with high-powered rifles and automated machine-gun turrets for no apparent reason beyond to terrorize them, and perhaps break up the monotony of a long shift in the watchtowers.
No, what punctuates the surreal insanity of this festering injustice is the reality defying gymnastics Western government spokespersons perform to somersault the truth of the matter, and how eagerly, in turn, their media collaborators parrot rather than challenge them.
Yes, Gaza is under full scale attack by Israel again, and as during the Christmas carnage of 2008-9, the demented few in power in Ottawa and London and Washington and Brussels will again provide cover for this egregious and obvious crime against humanity.
Jon Elmer is a Canadian freelance photo-journalist and author of the website JonElmer.ca. Jon has reported from and about Israel's occupation of Palestine for more than a decade, his dispatches appearing at Al Jazeera English, the Inter Press Service, and Le Monde Diplomatique among others. Jon also completed an honours degree in political science at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia; his thesis - "Pulling from the roots" - being a study of Israel's policy of assassination during the al-Aqsa intifada.
Over the weekend, the Finnish-flagged M/S Estelle attempted to ferry aid into the besieged Gaza Strip, and like previous attempts was intercepted by the Israeli navy in international waters, its crew and passengers taken into port at Ashdod and imprisoned.
As of Sunday October 21st, there is little word of the conditions of captivity for former Canadian MP Jim Manley, though a release from organizers of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition confirms: Some of the Estelle's crew has been deported to Greece and Italy.
Reports from Israeli activists on the ship claim passengers were "tasered" by the Israeli boarding party. For its part, Israeli authorities lied about the cargo on board the Estelle, maintaining the ship contained "no humanitarian aid."
The Estelle's attempt to break the years-old blockade of Gaza comes on the heels of last week's publication of Israeli documents confirming that state's practice of a calorie counting regimen restricting the amount of food allowed into the Gaza enclave based on an estimated minimal caloric intake per person necessary to avoid wide-spread starvation. Also known as the "Gaza Diet," the revelation is not news to Palestinians, or most Israelis, but does present an international embarrassment to the government, which has always denied such a policy existed.

His work can also be found at his website, JonElmer.ca. Jon Elmer in the first half.
And; the long-awaited October 22 manifestation is happening even now in downtown Victoria. The event, in part organized by the newly formed, Defend Our Coast coalition, and supported by a variety of international Environmental Non-Government Organizations hoped to rally British Columbians and others concerned about the Enbridge Gateway project, a massive pipeline proposal to sluice Tar Sands condensate-soaked bitumen to the port of Kitimat on its way to a trans-pacific voyage to the Asian market.
The format and nature of this demonstration is unique in my experience, and it has sparked some heated debate within the environmental community. I went down there this morning to record my impressions and those of the participants. Defending Our Coast in the second segment.
And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will join us at the bottom of the hour to bring us her take on Defend Our Coast and other manifestations in and around our city. But first, Jon Elmer on blockades and other doings in and around Occupied Palestine.

This week: Last week, the European Union came through for Israel, upgrading special trade status, strengthening economic ties on myriad fronts, and reversing trade penalties for the Gaza massacre of 2008. Most incredibly, all this was undertaken in violation of the EU's own European Neighbourhood Policy that requires "preferred trading partner" status be reserved for those nations respecting international human rights, democratic values, and the humanitarian obligations expected of civilized governments. And all this without AIPAC, or a November election.

Today at noon, the Women in Black held their Hiroshima Day vigil downtown at the tourist office, across from the Empress Hotel to remember Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the role Canada played in the production of the bombs that were needlessly dropped upon the people living there.
