Went down to Victoria's Gaza Demo and Vigil. This event was not organized by any single group or individual, but merely something thrown together by locals outraged by the massacre again of Gazans by the unrepentant and criminal Israel. At last count, more than 160 Gazan men, women, and children perished through the blitzkrieg, and more than 1100 were wounded. Psychological trauma is impossible to measure. Five Israeli's are reported to too have been killed, and some dozens more wounded by rocket fire from Gaza. American activist musician and songwriter, David Rovics also appeared.
This week: It's a story that may well have been lost. History instructor and award-winning author, Larry Hannant discovered the nearly forgotten manuscript for 'Champagne and Meatballs: Adventures of a Canadian Communist,' a compendium of journalist Bert Whyte's articles, letters, and remembrances over the most politically turbulent decades of the 20th Century, bringing to light a unique angle on a period of this country's history that resonates with an eerily familiar ring today.
Larry Hannant in the first half.
And; Gilad Atzmon's new book, 'The Wandering Who? A Study of Jewish Identity Politics' has received raves and rages.
Its publisher says 'The Wandering Who?' raises; "[S]ome of the most difficult and contentious issues of today..." examining; "[T]ribal aspects embedded in Jewish secular discourse, both Zionist and anti Zionist; the 'holocaust religion'; the meaning of 'history' and 'time' within the Jewish political discourse; the anti-Gentile ideologies entangled within different forms of secular Jewish political discourse and even with the Jewish left."
It's a book, international jurist and UN Special Rapporteur for Occupied Palestinian Territories, Professor Richard Falk calls; "A transformative story told with unflinching integrity that all (especially Jews) who care about real peace, as well as their own identity, should not only read, but reflect upon and discuss widely."
Gilad Atzmon and 'The Wandering Who? A Study Of Jewish Identity Politics' in the second half.
And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will join us at the bottom of the hour to bring us newz from the city's streets and beyond. But first Larry Hannant and the memoir of political activist extraordinaire, Bert Whyte, 'Champagne and Meatballs: Adventures of a Canadian Communist.'
