Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Larry Hannant, Gilad Atzmon, Janine Bandcroft Jan. 16, 2012

Date 2012-01-17

This week: It's a story that may well have been lost. History instructor and award-winning author, Larry Hannant discovered the nearly forgotten manuscript for 'Champagne and Meatballs: Adventures of a Canadian Communist,' a compendium of journalist Bert Whyte's articles, letters, and remembrances over the most politically turbulent decades of the 20th Century, bringing to light a unique angle on a period of this country's history that resonates with an eerily familiar ring today. Larry Hannant in the first half. And; Gilad Atzmon's new book, 'The Wandering Who? A Study of Jewish Identity Politics' has received raves and rages. Its publisher says 'The Wandering Who?' raises; "[S]ome of the most difficult and contentious issues of today..." examining; "[T]ribal aspects embedded in Jewish secular discourse, both Zionist and anti Zionist; the 'holocaust religion'; the meaning of 'history' and 'time' within the Jewish political discourse; the anti-Gentile ideologies entangled within different forms of secular Jewish political discourse and even with the Jewish left." It's a book, international jurist and UN Special Rapporteur for Occupied Palestinian Territories, Professor Richard Falk calls; "A transformative story told with unflinching integrity that all (especially Jews) who care about real peace, as well as their own identity, should not only read, but reflect upon and discuss widely." Gilad Atzmon and 'The Wandering Who? A Study Of Jewish Identity Politics' in the second half. And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will join us at the bottom of the hour to bring us newz from the city's streets and beyond. But first Larry Hannant and the memoir of political activist extraordinaire, Bert Whyte, 'Champagne and Meatballs: Adventures of a Canadian Communist.' Ape Speaks with Gilad Atzmon Jan. 15, 2012

Date 2012-01-15

Gilad Atzmon's New Book: The Wandering Who? A Study Of Jewish Identity Politics Jewish identity is tied up with some of the most difficult and contentious issues of today. The purpose in this book is to open many of these issues up for discussion. Since Israel defines itself openly as the ‘Jewish State’, we should ask what the notions of ’Judaism’, ‘Jewishness’, ‘Jewish culture’ and ‘Jewish ideology’ stand for. Gilad examines the tribal aspects embedded in Jewish secular discourse, both Zionist and anti Zionist; the ‘holocaust religion’; the meaning of ‘history’ and ‘time’ within the Jewish political discourse; the anti-Gentile ideologies entangled within different forms of secular Jewish political discourse and even within the Jewish left. He questions what it is that leads Diaspora Jews to identify themselves with Israel and affiliate with its politics. The devastating state of our world affairs raises an immediate demand for a conceptual shift in our intellectual and philosophical attitude towards politics, identity politics and history. Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Gilad Atzmon, Phil Nauta, Janine Bandcroft Mon. May 9, 2011

Date 2011-05-10

Gilad Atzmon is known for his unsparing criticism of the policies of his former home-country, Israel and the complicity in those policies of his ex-compatriots and their supporters within the Sayanim community of diaspora Jews. He has been assailed from all sides for his uncompromising determination to speak out for human rights denied the occupied Palestinian people, remaining one of the most thoughtful and ardent proponents of justice for the victims of Israel, while his writing and lectures serve as clarion for a more humane world. Gilad Atzmon is currently on the road, touring the USA to "meet with friends and supporters to talk about Israel, Palestine and the power of the beauty." He is using the tour to fund raise for various humanitarian causes concerning Palestine, and will join us from San Francisco in the first half. Phil Nauta is an organic gardener, educator, entrepreneur, and author. He was a seminal instructor with Gaia College here in Victoria, and is a past director with The Society for Organic Urban Land Care, or SOUL. While in town, he also ran an organic landscaping business and organic fertilizer retail business, saying he is "compelled to write and teach other gardeners about organic methods." He does that now through his SmilingGardener website, and with his new book, 'The Holistic Gardening Handbook.' Phil Nauta, getting dirty in the garden, and living it in the second half. And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will join us at the bottom of the hour to bring us up to speed with some of the goings on going on on Victoria's streets and beyond.
