These past dozen years in North America has witnessed a full-speed regression through the historic development of Western civilization, such as it is. Beginning with the Bush claque's pre-emptive assault on the very foundations of secular democracy through the undoing of the Great Charter, Magna Carta, cornerstone of the English Common Law, the dismantling of an economic system that allowed a "Middle Class" of citizens be created to better distribute the wealth of society, to the coup de grace - erasure of the concept of the separation of Church and State. We stand today, in 2013, perched atop a precipice, looking down into the abyss; peering into the face of a new Dark Age. In Canada, the famously devout christian prime minister, Stephen Harper has missed no opportunity to pour scorn upon our quaint notions of representative democracy, denigrating the power of the People's House as ably as any medieval theocrat at every opportunity. While the recent stifling of the scribes, toiling soon one imagines in candlelit hovels, at Library and Archives Canada is outrageous it is merely another in a growing retinue of outrages committed by this government against our history, culture, and institutional underpinnings; all pointing to an antipathy to and intentional subversion of the nation. But, Mr. Harper's 'New Government' regime has greater ambitions than the mere disintegration of Canada; he and they would too annihilate Science itself. Katie Gibbs holds a Doctorate in Biology from the U. of Ottawa, and last summer led the 'Death of Evidence' rally, a mock funeral and mass held in our nation's capital to protest government cuts to research funding, the muzzling of public sector scientists, and the introduction of the profoundly anti-evidentiary, Bill C-38. Gibbs is now Executive Director of Evidence for Democracy, an organization advocating for the use of evidence in government decision-making on public policy, whose latest campaign Science Uncensored is taking action against policies barring public access to publicly-funded scientists and their findings. Katie Gibbs in the first half. And; one of the very first things the BC Liberals accomplished on coming to power in 2001 was an expansion of Grizzly Bear hunting for, mostly foreign, adventurers eager to prove their primitive mettle a sacred ritual of being hand-held and led to unsuspecting wildlife to enable their killing, from great distances, with high-powered rifles. The magnetic allure of the ancient art has so entranced successive BC Liberal leaders, both testicled and otherwise, that April Fools 2013 marks the continuity of this testosterone fed festival of death, officially known as the opening of the bear season. Kiff Archer and Jason Moody live within the Great Bear Rainforest on the mid-coast of British Columbia, and are both with the newly formed, Central Coast Grizzly Patrol. They were here at the start of last Fall's hunting season to talk about the beginning of the Coastal First Nations Coalition and its unilateral declaration of a ban on trophy hunting in the territories. The province of BC does not however recognize the authority of the First Nations, nor does it honour their demands for a ban on the hunt. Kiff Archer and Jason Moody still standing tall in defense of the bears and other "trophy" targets of the Great Bear Rainforest in the second half. And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV Radio broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will be here at the bottom of the hour to bring us newz from our city's streets and beyond. But first, Katie Gibbs and removing the Harper muzzle on Canada's public science and policy informants. Chris Cook hosts Gorilla Radio, airing live every Monday, 5-6pm Pacific Time. In Victoria at 101.9FM, and on the internet at: http://cfuv.uvic.ca. He also serves as a contributing editor to the web news site, http://www.pacificfreepress.com. Two months before a BC election, join concerned citizens from all walks of life - conservationists, forestry workers, First Nations, business owners, children, parents, seniors, and students - in demanding that the BC Liberal government and the NDP opposition commit to a plan that will protect BC’s endangered old-growth forests and forestry jobs, and finally bring an end to BC’s “War in the Woods”. The continued support of the BC government for the status quo of unsustainable resource depletion and raw log exports has caused the increasing collapse of native ecosystems and rural communities. 75% of Vancouver Island’s original ancient forests have already been logged, including 90% of the valley bottoms where the largest trees grow. BC’s old-growth forests are vital to support endangered species, tourism, the climate, clean water, wild salmon, and many First Nations cultures. See spectacular images and videos of BC’s old-growth forests at: www.AncientForestAlliance.org Help ensure a sustainable, value-added, second-growth forest industry that keeps the logs in the province to support BC forestry jobs! Support First Nations land use plans calling for the protection of old-growth forests! Because thousands of people like YOU spoke up against the BC Liberal government’s attempts to increase the privatization of our public forest lands for major logging companies (their proposed “Forest Giveaway Bill”, in Bill 8, to expand Tree Farm Licences on Crown lands), the BC government has just backed down! See http://www.ancientforestalliance.org/news-item.php?ID=587 Now lets MOVE FORWARD to make progress for a sustainable forest economy! Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Ray Mesaud Behri, Bob Simpson, Janine Bandcroft Mar 4, 2013

Date 2013-03-05

Two weeks ago, the European Union's Parliament approved a Free Trade deal with Morocco, promising to extend duty-free status to more of that country's agriculture and fisheries exports. It's a deal that, if ratified, would strengthen economic and political ties with the North African nation. While garnering bumper profits for transnational corporations and a handful of Moroccan insiders, this deal will not, in Member of the European Parliament, Jose Bove's opinion, benefit either Moroccan farmers, or be helpful in addressing the displacement and ongoing occupation by Morocco of the indigenous people of Western Sahara. As in Palestine, the EU, and the United States continue to, despite repeated UN resolutions declaring its illegality, support and profit from the brutal occupation. Ray Mesaud Burhi is the official representative to Canada of the government of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic in exile. He and his family fled their homeland in Western Sahara when he was a child, settling in the refugee camp at Tindouf, Algeria. Burhi received his engineering degree at the University of Oriente in Cuba, and master's degree in international cooperation and development at the University of Barcelona. He's also served Saharawi Delegations to Spain, the EU, South-East Asia and now North America. Ray Mesaud Burhi will be here in Victoria on the 22nd of this month as part of a public event for Western Sahara sponsored by the Barnard-Boecker Centre Foundation's Mining Justice Action Committee, and UVic's Social Justice Studies Program. Ray Mesaud Burhi in the first half. And; in anticipation of British Columbia's looming election, the BC Liberals have introduced a bit of legislation that promises to complete what the long-gone and unlamented Social Credit party tried to foist on us before their immolation nearly 25 years ago. The innocuously titled, Bill 8 is a Harper-styled omnibus of rich give-aways to corporations far and near, and if allowed to run its ruinous course will entirely reverse decades of forestry policy in the province, delivering up whole hog unknowable lucre to the likes of mega-corps BAM and TAM, Shock Doctrine troopers specializing in "distressed asset management." It would mean a mass transfer of wealth into private hands, chapping public assets, while endangering the future well-being of both the people and wildlife of BC. Bob Simpson is MLA for Cariboo North, sitting as an Independent since his unceremonious ejection by erstwhile NDP leader, Carole James in 2010. He's been warning everyone who'll listen, Bill 8 is a bad deal all around for this province, saying; "[I]t's a backroom deal with no requirement for public consultation." He also says it's tantamount to the privatization of our publicly held forests. Of Christie Clark's effort with Bill 8, Simpson says; "The public will see it as privatization" adding; "...[T]his is a 100-year conversation in B.C. and the public has always said 'no' and they're going to say 'no' again." Perhaps they will, if given the chance to find out about it. Bob Simpson and rooting out the rotten core of Bill 8 in the second half. And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will join us at the bottom the hour to bring us newz from our city's streets and beyond. But first, Ray Mesaud Burhri and that other occupation state, the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic. Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Arnie Gundersen, Greg Palast, Janine Bandcroft Sept. 24, 2012

Date 2012-09-25

Following the Soviet fall, triumphalist American economists declared an end to history, as though human progression through time had reached a just and stable equilibrium. Capitalism was Number One, and it was here to stay. But, and it was indeed a very big "but", those optimistic prognosticators hadn't figured on the rise of George W. Bush, or more properly, "Bush's Brain" in the form of Karl Rove. Though not alone, Rove ushered in a new age of Crony Capitalism through his relentless assault on both American Justice, and the laws governing the political process. So successful has Karl and his cohorts been, they have effectively hijacked every major election in America since the year 2000, and stand ready to do the same in 2012. Greg Palast is a multi-award winning reporting investigator and the serial best-seller author of 'The Best Democracy Money Can Buy,' 'Armed Madhouse,' Vulture's Picnic,' and his most recent, 'Billionaires & bandits: How to Steal an Election in 9 Easy Steps'. Working both sides of the pond, Palast's reports for the BBC's flagship news program, Newsnight have rocked corporate crooks and struck terror into the hearts of political bagmen in Britain and America. The too few outlets brave enough to carry his investigative journalism in the United States include: Harper's, The Nation, and Rolling Stone magazine, while Democracy Now! is virtually alone in covering Greg's television work, rebroadcasting portions of his BBC exposes. Greg Palast in the first half. And; more than eighteen months after the destruction of Fukushima's Daiichi Nuclear facility radiation continues to spew from the plant. Four of the six reactors housed there were destroyed in the aftermath of the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, and still neither the plant's operators, TEPCO nor the Japanese government has any idea how to contain the meltdown. Arnie Gundersen is a former nuclear power engineer and recipient of the Atomic Energy Commission Fellowship for his Master Degree in nuclear engineering. He is a former licensed reactor operator, nuclear industry senior vice-president, and nuclear safety patent holder. Over the course of his 40-plus year career, Gundersen managed and coordinated projects at 70 nuclear power plants within the United States. Arnie Gundersen has filed reports on the unfolding situation at Daiichi, and the current conditions of many of America's nuclear facilities, through his energy consulting company, Fairewinds Associates. Arnie Gundersen charting the course of the nuclear power industry in the second half. And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV Radio broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will be here at the bottom of the hour to bring us newz from our city's streets and beyond. But first, Greg Palast and taking the next election the easy way. Chris Cook hosts Gorilla Radio, airing live every Monday, 5-6pm Pacific Time. Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Steve Anderson, Gerry Bill, Janine Bandcroft July 2, 2012

Date 2012-07-03

Steve Anderson is Executive Director at OpenMedia.ca, an organization at the forefront of resistance to all manner of proposed government and corporate controls designed to, by turn, restrict Internet freedoms, and further commodify access for the benefit of corporate monopolists. Open Media is sounding the warning now in a campaign against proposed TPP provisions they say would determine how the internet will be governed, and who will profit by it. Steve Anderson and stopping the TTP trap in the first half. And; efforts to confront and defy the Cuba embargo have continued; the best known of these is the Pastors for Peace Cuba Caravan, which has traveled from cities across Canada and the United States for each of the last twenty-two years of the Bloqueo, carrying "contraband" goods for Cuba. Gerry Bill is Emeritus Professor of Sociology and American Studies at Fresno City College in California. He's traveling for the seventh time with this year's 23rd Pastors for Peace aid caravan to Cuba. Gerry is one of the founders of the Fresno Center for Nonviolence, and is on the boards of the Fresno Free College Foundation, Peace Fresno, and the Central California Criminal Justice Committee. Gerry Bill and sailing again for Cuba with the Pastors in the second half. And; Victoria Street Newz publisher, and CFUV Radio broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will join us at the bottom of the hour to bring us up to speed with events both local, and as they unfold at the Canadian border, where Vancouver's contingent to the Pastors for Peace caravan to Cuba has been held up. But first, Steve Anderson and StoptheTrap.net. Chris Cook hosts Gorilla Radio, airing live every Monday, 5-6pm Pacific Time.
