Ape Goes to Peter Verin Memorial Service January 19, 2017

I went down to Peter Verin’s memorial service today. Peter was an itinerant environmentalist. He lived on the streets, refusing to live in any way most of us would recognize as “normal.” There are a number of tributes published to him linked below, but suffice to say, he was well loved, despite, or more likely because of his curmudgeonly demeanor. There was somewhere between one and two hundred people present to hear reverend Al Tysick’s send off, with many voicing their relationship to Peter. Those are recorded here, (with varying technical alacrity).

I met Peter many years ago, when we were both broadcasters at the University of Victoria radio station, CFUV. Peter had an environmental show, and we often talked about politics. Indeed, Peter engaged generations of students in long, philosophical debates on all manner of topics. Like some latter-day Socrates, Peter’s uncompromising personality had a cost; he was eventually banned from the radio station, and later kicked off campus altogether.

Adios Peter, our philosopher prince.
